Educational displays, exhibits, presentations, music and entertainment highlight the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources’ annual exhibit at the Minnesota State Fair, which runs Aug. 22-Sept. 2 in Falcon Heights.

This year’s theme is, “Public lands, owned by you, managed by DNR.”

“We know Minnesotans truly value public lands for recreation, conservation and their economic benefits,” said Dawn Flinn, who helps coordinate the DNR exhibits. “Minnesotans are passionate about the state’s natural resources. Our exhibit is great way for us to spread the word about how interesting, important and exciting it is to experience nature on public lands near you.”-8-e1565985654529-225x300.jpg

The DNR’s iconic State Fair log building opened 85 years ago; its park-like location provides fairgoers with a unique opportunity to experience the outdoors in the midst of carnival rides and food stands.

“It’s a popular state fair landmark, meeting place and must-visit destination that has helped generations of people create life-long memories,” Flinn said.

The new Legacy Amendment exhibit in the DNR building features information about Legacy-funded parks and trails projects. The exhibit includes an Instagrammable 17-foot waterfall and other photo opportunities, a game where people can show the DNR how they would choose to spend Legacy dollars, an award-winning website that lets people search state and regional parks and trails all in one place, and a children’s play area.

Inside the DNR building, fairgoers can see displays about forestry, wildlife, rocks and minerals, aquatic invasive species and public lands.   Other features include:

  • Photo opportunities from the giant hiking boot in the forestry exhibit.
  • The outdoor fish pond with about three dozen fish species.
  • The DNR fire tower; visitors can climb its 84 steps.
  • Presentations and musicians on the DNR Volunteer Outdoor Stage and Garden Stage.

Fair visitors can buy hunting and fishing licenses and state park vehicle permits at the DNR building. Les Kouba Outdoors will have merchandise for sale at a booth just east of the outdoor fishpond. A portion of the merchandise sales will fund DNR’s moose research.

For a schedule of events, including those where DNR commissioner and Gov. and Lt Gov. are scheduled to make appearances, visit mndnr.gov/events/statefair/schedules.html.

The DNR’s State Fair building and surrounding park area are located at the corner of Carnes Avenue and Nelson Street in Falcon Heights. It will be open 9 a.m.-9 p.m. daily during the fair.

I’m finding having the plow is becoming pretty important for mobility with the big house again this year.  Been nice the past couple to not have to worry about it.

Well, this one is only about a 1/4 the size of the one down in the cities.  And if you don't have $12,000 to $120,000 to buy a ATV, boat or camper. For the $10 to get in and $3.50 to park.  It can be fun to have a hotdog, snag some freebie pens, cozies and candy and watch the kids fish!   😉

I'll have to say I was getting a little bummed out watching the kids fish the pond at the show yesterday. One little kid with his dad hooked 3 fish and never got a one in! One teen girl had probably the biggest in the tank on and it broke her off!  With the smooth barbless hooks and the Walmart 1lb line. It's freeking worst then a carnival game on the midway!  Great way to get kids involved! 😒

Back in the 70s when a bunch of us early teenagers would go to the SportShow, we figured out the flies never got down to the trout with all the moving water. A little split shot solved that problem. 😆

Friday was a beautiful day on Vermilion.  The fresh snow and high winds made pretty drifts on the lake, as long as you weren't trying to travel off plowed roads.  Watched a large 4x4 truck travel off road and it hit some very large drifts, but didn't get stuck.  Not too many houses were left but many new ones were being pulled out onto the lake for the weekend.  Was a nice view at dark seeing all the lights on the lake.   Fishing was average.  I had to shovel snow off of our mobile home roof so I didn't get out until 10am.  Was a decent bite at 11am, and then from 330-415pm, but other than that it was very quiet for me.  Vermilion Fuel and Food finally had shiners so I tried those and caught most of my fish on them.   Good luck fishing, be very courteous if you use plowed roads, and be careful if you travel off road.

We went from no snow to enough quickly. I will have to go check out the lakes with updates on which ones have plowed roads around. Be safe and bring a shovel.

Last Friday, it was still pretty busy for a week day.   I've gotten a few out of there over the years.

A few years ago when my son and wife came over to watch the game!
