Many activities planned for event Aug. 6-8 in Redwood County

Live fish, pollinator tubes and sessions on campfire cooking and angling for catfish are just some of the attractions under the big tent this year at Farmfest, according to the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources.

The DNR will return to its large tent format to meet, share information and visit with attendees at this year’s event taking place Aug. 6-8 at Gilfillan Estates near Morgan in Redwood County.

“FarmFest is the big summer event in southern Minnesota’s farming community, and it’s always fun to see partners and farming families come by our booth,” said Scott Roemhildt, DNR regional director. “We look forward to great conversations and making new connections with folks in the farming community.”

Informal, half-hour sessions will be held each day in the tent on topics including angling for catfish on the Minnesota River, campfire cooking, and how to successfully raise a pollinator garden. There will also be an information booth and displays around the tent ranging from live Minnesota fish, firearms safety, and the Turn In Poachers Wall of Shame. Conservation officers and other DNR staff will be on hand to answer questions.

Parents are welcome to bring their children and help them build pollinator boxes that they can bring home to provide valuable habitat for bees. There is no cost.

In addition, on Aug. 6, the DNR will be joining Gov. Tim Walz and leaders from other state agencies to discuss rural Minnesota and agriculture. That session will take place from 1 p.m. to 2:45 p.m. in the Wicks Farmfest Event Center.

The final day, Thursday, at the DNR tent will be capped off with a birthday party at 1 p.m. for Smokey Bear, who turns 75. Cake and refreshments will be served.

“We hope Farmfest visitors take some time to stop by and meet us,” Roemhildt said. “Our tent will be full of fun, educational activities and we’ll be available all three days to address questions or concerns.”

The DNR tent will be open from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. on Aug. 6; and 8 a.m. until 4 p.m. on Aug. 7 and 8. More information on Farmfest’s hours and pricing are available at ideaggroup.com/farmfest.
