What’s the lake trout situation on that lake? Are they mostly on Canadian side? Other than a picture here and there, I never hear anything about them. Not even on lakefinder.

I have caught lake trout only in the USA. I haven't fished in Canada on Basswood. The lake trout I have caught over the years on Basswood have all been on the prairie portage side and early in the year. I haven't fished for them towards the end of summer or in fall.

I have an overnight motor pass for the end of September. I wasn’t planning on fishing for lakers, but I’ll keep an eye on my depth finder, and see if I mark any fish over deep water.

I will talk with the guys that I know that guide up here and I will see what they have to say.  Large walleyes and smallmouths are what seem to be biting around the end of September!

@chaffmj I missed this post somehow - what a great day you had!  The lakers are of course really cool but the smallie; holy cow...

@JBMasterAngler I saw a laker in pretty shallow water near Washington Island one year on Basswood but I’ve never connected with one either.  I have long line trolled those open water basins with deep diving, long profile cranks and picked up the bigger pike and walleyes out there though.  I usually marked em before I caught em.

Went fishing last Wednesday on Basswood with Rob Nelson owner of Ely Fishing Guide Company.

This was the largest walleye of the day. A little over 29 inches but was also skinny compared to the rest. We used jigs and lindy rigs with sucker minnows. We did manage to catch a couple of smaller walleyes for the frying pan. ?

Very nice fish! I’ll be up there in 2 weeks, and was contemplating bringing minnows. Pics kind of solidify my decision.
