Glendalough State Park in west-central Minnesota will host its 23rd annual Walk for Glendalough on Saturday, April 20, a fundraiser for new park amenities.

Registration begins at 9 a.m. at the historic Glendalough Lodge, which will be open for tours.

The annual fundraising event has raised over $300,000 for projects at Glendalough State Park. “Many of the amenities that park visitors enjoy today would not have been possible without the funds raised by the walk,” said Jeff Wiersma, Glendalough State Park manager.

At the event, Park Partners will host a short program on fundraising efforts on a proposed new trailhead building and an update on a bill in the Legislature to expand the boundary of Glendalough. In addition, there will be an update on a grant proposal to complete the bike trail loop in the park.

Participants at the event can start the day with a donut and some coffee or cider at the trail center before taking off for a morning stroll or bike ride. Spotting scopes will be set up at the eagle nest to view the nesting eagles. For those who are unable to walk or bike long distances, shuttles will be available to take visitors on a trail tour with a stop near the eagle nest.

A bratwurst lunch will be offered as well as an opportunity to win door prizes.

The walk is sponsored by the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, Minnesota Parks and Trails Council and Glendalough Park Partners. Funded projects include construction of year-round restrooms at the trail center, the Molly Stark Lake picnic shelter, the Annie Battle Lake hiking trail bridge, an outdoor seating area and wildlife viewing blinds, restoration of the historic Glendalough Lodge and prairie restoration.

There is no fee to enter the park for the walk, but since the walk is intended as a fundraiser, donations will be encouraged. The event wraps up by 1 p.m., but visitors can extend their day with an overnight stay in the cart-in campground, a camper cabin, or a yurt.

For more information, call the park at 218-864-0110 or visit mndnr.gov/state_parks/glendalough.

Monday was my worst day of winter fishing on Vermilion in the last 4 years.  Caught only one 14" walleye in nearly 8 hours of fishing.  Missed two other bites and was marking very few fish.  Maybe the fish were taking Monday off after a big weekend.   No more water came up on the ice under my house.  Think it was because I haven't banked snow around it for a couple of weeks so the bare ice around the house is getting very thick.  I measured 38" of ice under my house and the Ion barely made it through even with the extension installed.  Needless to say I banked around the house this time.  Another lesson I learned today is don't drill holes if ice is frozen on your blades.  I did that on one hole and it didn't center properly and drilled at an angle on the edge of the opening.  Hope I can correct the location and angle on my next trip up.   Not much change in the surface lake surface conditions.  The drifts may be a little higher and are definitely harder.  There are still a few bare ice spots on the lake.  Very little activity on the lake today.  There are about 3 dozen houses from McKinley Park out to Birch Island.  Another person pulled there house off today, and I am sure many more will pull theirs off this coming weekend.  Only 13 days left of walleye season.

Great looking food. So far not much of a game and I thought the halftime show was worse I've seen.
