Well Boy & Girls, it's that time of year again when I think Smelt and Lake Superior shallow spring fishing! I live a couple miles north of lake Superior and check my the creek in my yard to tell me the incoming stream temps. There still a lot of snow in my yard and temp is 32 deg. in the creek. Shouldn't be too long with the warmer weather before the silver shiny smelt start to school and run up rivers, sands beaches of mn/park point and others.

Feel free to post reports, sightings ad questions!

Well 40 to 50 mph winds on lake Superior will keep me off the beach. Hopefully I will be able to get down to the Lester for a check in case.

The drop in temps may just set them back a while anyway.

And all of the ice that is now on shore...

The wind has driven the ice back into the harbor. Might be some big piles along shore.

Not going to be accessing the soft water off of park point anytime in the near future. It's pulled fairly high on shore. Some of this will blow out but not all. Unreal the amount of ice that's pulled up now vs a week ago when everything was mostly blown out to the other end of the lake.

Thank you for the report and please keep us updated on water temp,,I'm not a smelter but a steelhead Fisher and water temp is key,,also helps to not waste gas and time if conditions aren't right

Made it down to the Lester Friday . Water was fast and deep. Tried, but nothing scooped.

Sure wish we would get a strong enough east wind to pile the ice on shore. Lot of ice out there and it will take a long time if it has to all melt.

Any updates ??

I just heard they are running in Ashland so the time is getting near. If this weeks temp were higher is would help  but the smelt won't wait much longer.

Have the smelt started in park point?  I haven't heard any reports from anyone anywhere.

Not sure how the run is or was, but there was a guy selling Smelt on C/List a week ago.

I have seen post on FB with local people getting smelt and lots of them. One was at the Lester River but not sure of the others.
