BIGFISH.JZ Posted February 26, 2019 Posted February 26, 2019 Just wondering if anybody wants to share any REAL eelpout info? Other than the large, known burbot lakes, any smaller bodies of water that people have stumbled across them? I've heard that Thunder lake (Remer) Ten Mile (Hackensack) And East Crooked (Park Rapids) have them as well as the Whitefish chain (Brainerd) can anybody confirm this or possibly add to the list. I am willing to share some of my spots or tricks to gain a little bit of knowledge. Quote
Chill62 Posted February 28, 2019 Posted February 28, 2019 You always hear the big lakes like LOW or Leech but other than that I only hear Bad Medicine for getting some. I've never seen one in person so it'd be a dream of mine to catch some. Quote

If you are near a lake that has them, a large weedless shallow flat with steep drops into deep (50'+) water is a good place to start now that they are getting ready to spawn. Quote
Chill62 Posted February 28, 2019 Posted February 28, 2019 I live in Moorhead but our lake cabin is down by Perham so we fish that area each weekend. This weekend will be my first weekend of not fishing since before Thanksgiving but I'm only not fishing because I need to get the hard sided house off the ice and plan on hitting the Sportsman's Show up in Fargo and the snow is too deep for me to get out to my tulibee spots lol. I'm sorry I don't have any more information other than the lake...seems guys keep their pout spots very secretive and never gone I wouldn't know a good spot from a bad spot and I've never been on the lake in the winter and that lake with springs would make me nervous doing a solo mission without following tracks on the lake. About 4 years ago my old man caught one trout fishing out there in the boat over 4th of July weekend middle of the day suspended and it had to been around 8 pounds. Wasn't in my boat and he was trying to pawn it off as a trout but it didn't look like a trout! lol 1 Quote
BIGFISH.JZ Posted March 1, 2019 Author Posted March 1, 2019 I would think that any lake with a decent tullibee population and, I'm assuming, clear deep water, has a possibly of having some pout. Even if the dnr hasn't gotten any in their July gill netting. Maybe hang out after dark some day pounding bottom on the edge of your tullibee hole. It sounds like you're a die hard and put in your time on the lake, being able to snag a handful of pout is an achievable goal. Quote
Chill62 Posted March 1, 2019 Posted March 1, 2019 After you mentioned that...Star in Ottertail County has a population is what I have heard. It'll have to be a different year or we will need about 2-2.5 feet of snow to shrink down and get solid for travel. Quote
JBMasterAngler Posted March 3, 2019 Posted March 3, 2019 Most of the lake trout lakes in the Grand Marais and Ely areas have decent to excellent populations of eel pout. Duluth harbor and park point of Lake Superior are popular eel pout spots also. Quote
BIGFISH.JZ Posted March 3, 2019 Author Posted March 3, 2019 Thanks JB! When I end up in laker territory I fish for the big trout especially hard. And its paid off for me with a couple beasts (38" & 42")By the time it gets dark I'm so exhausted the last thing on my mind is jigging up some pout. Quote
