Are there ice roads on Vermilion? 

 

Considering trying to fish it this weekend with the family from a portable but dont have a sled or 4wheeler to get around.  

 

Possibly staying at fortune bay.

Fortune bay had a plowed road not sure if it’s open to public it just for their rental houses.

McKinley Park campground by Tower has roads that are plowed by private parties that have their permanent ice houses out at that area of the lake . Plenty of area here to also not be crowding existing permanents .Should have no problems here unless maybe shortly after snow falls , which do seem to be happening quite often as of late up this way , good luck .!

Casino, McKinley and stuntz bay about your only options. 95% of the lake has no roads and only accessible with other means of travel. Highly unlikely you'll be able to off-road. We've received 8 inches snow this week more on the way.

Where is road out ofnin stuntz bay. Have not heard if that road

The road runs right through the middle of the bay, impossible to miss. You have to drive through Soudan Underground Mine SP and down by the historic boathouses is the access. Summer you need to pay to use the access but not sure how it works in winter, I don't personally use it.

Haven't used the Stuntz bay ice road for years . It used to run toward the East end of Ely island. I do use the landing a few times in the summer . The landing is OK but parking is sparse .  You can buy a parking pass at the Soudan store for about  $10.00. I wonder if there is a road out of the new landing at Cable bay ?

 There had not been one established. The lake snowmobile trail comes up at the ramp, crosses the parking lot and goes up into the woods/lake vermilion state park.

Good luck getting out this weekend.  We arrived at the cabin last night to about as much snow as I’ve ever seen on the ground here.  Nat’l Weather Service says 25” snowpack, but feels like more? Could be drifting.  We’ve got snowmobiles to pull our fish house and I’m not even sure if that is going to work given the snow depth.  We’ll see.

Travel on the lake off the staked trail wasn’t as bad as expected. The snow on the lake is deep, but the snow machines handled it well, even riding 2-up and pulling a loaded Otter.

Is there a road going out from Hoodoo or McKinley? Anyone know?

Wondering if anyone knows the road conditions out of McKinley with the snow we have got last few weeks. I have a group coming up this weekend and thinking that’s going to be the best location to go. Anyone know if water is coming up when a hole is drilled

      application has been submitted. 👍   Leech......i've shot my share of bear......it be nice to get another but not the end of the world if i dont. i get to spend time with my son...its just another way to get into the woods. i've been at it since about 1976......that rush when you walk up to the bait and see the logs scattered all over and bait gone just doesnt get old for me.   i had to get rid of 1 rug because of bad tanning. i have another rug, shoulder mount and made 3 pillows from 2 different bear hides. my biggest issue has become what to do with the hide....that seems more of a trophy then the meat. i inquired 1 year at the Alex decoy show when there were a couple hide guys there and they didnt seem to interested. 🙄 i have no other ideas for the hide.......approval from the wife is not even negotiable!!!!!

      Something in May, like around Opener.  Could be white knuckles for boaters that weekend with the way things stalled out since the contest started and how thick it still is.   Highs in the 50’s coming but lows are around freezing and not a lot of wind in the extended forecast.   I’ll tell  ya what, if you change from 4/26 and it hits that date, I’ll buy ya some mythical FM beer.  And you know where you can find it. 😉. But don’t change on my account - this is still a free country!

      I caught the 10pm news the other night. They said that starting next week Minnesota will be above average for temps. I give them a 33% chance of getting that right.
