2019 Duck Geese Goose Waterfowl Opener (2018 Too)

Recommended Posts

Well, it’s just about here.  I’ve been plotting and planning in the background of my everyday life.  Testing different decoy rigs, organizing my accessories, getting my camping gear and truck squared away to disappear for a few days.

Options are still open at this time but the one sure thing is I’m unplugging and going on a true wander-about.  At least for a few days, 21st -24th.  One good, easygoing buddy, 2 kayaks, a wheelhouse and no itinerary.  Just a desire to explore places we haven’t hunted yet in northern MN between Brainerd and Baudette.  Sure, we have ideas on where.  Some spots scouted in person and others by map and satellite, but nothing rigid.  And at some point if the birds aren’t in the bag, some fish might get hooked.

I love this state for the sheer amount of options we sportsmen have.

Anyone got any plans they care to share?  Or maybe when it’s all said and done, share some pics and stories?

Me and my hunting buddy will start out the day in our duck dock by home. Fried egg sandwiches at around 8:00 I'm guessing.

If the geese show up we will have a field hunt when we're done on the water.

Quite the blind you built there.

It's worked well. The blind in the pic is 8'. I also built a 4'. We hunted three people out of the 8' and one in the 4'.

I will be, but I'm going to be sad since all the perfect hunting weather over the last three days rolls out just in time for opener ?‍♂️

For all the stuff I thought I had at my fingertips to pack, I sure am taking all week to get it done!  At least I have all my supplies.  I just keep tinkering on this and that, not getting it bagged up!

Leaving tomorrow morning around 9 and should have the entire afternoon to scout our top areas.  We’ll land somewhere in the northern third of the state.

It's always nice when you have a week to get everything nicely packed, organized and ready to go. ?

It's just that few hours when you get home tired and dump it all in a big dirty pile to sort out that suk! ?

Gook Luck!

Quite a bit slower today. Only saw 2 teal between yesterday and today, which  really surprised me and most of the wood ducks seemed to have moved on. Didn’t stick around long enough for the geese. Hope everyone had a great weekend and good luck!

I had a good opener.  Two friends and I got 10 ducks and with some better shooting we could probably had 12 or 13.  It was significantly better than the last two openers and certainly better than I expected.  We had nice mixed bag of wood ducks, mallards, teal, and even got a shoveler.  It was very comfortable out there too.  Was nice not to sit there and roast away in my chest waders this time.

I had a good opener, also with ten. We should have taken a lot more, but shooting, jitters, and other factors prevented it (as usual). For us, Sunday was really slow, but still managed to bag a few.

Totally disagree Gim. I have a gas Jiffy legend auger. Never issues. Take a little time to care for it before putting it away and good to go. Sincei started using non oxygen gas, startron and seafood in never have issues with my 2 strokes.   Guess when them damb helicopters from my maple tree arrive I'll  find out how good she blows,  doubt I'll  get a chance first with Stormy to compare!🤭   Anyone got trumps number?😄

Wow, 600 bucks for a battery powered lawn mower?  Guess I didn't realize they costed that much.   I assume most people now are using battery augers in the winter.  I remember when they first came out everyone thought they were a joke.  Things sure have changed on that front.  I hardly see anyone using a gas auger anymore.   The selling point, at least for me, would be to avoid having to do any engine maintenance.  Small 2 stroke motors are a pain in the rear to maintain, and unreliable at best.

I'll bet she's better at it!!!!

I don't know, this save the plant thing looks like a money maker, for someone! 🫤 Where do you think electric prices are going to go when they have the monopoly for everything that moves! 🙄

Nice!   It would be great if they had some kind of brake, so you don't end up on your neighbors YouTube video going down the driveway! 😆

Last month I went searching online for a trailer jack with pneumatic tires. Instead I found the video below showing a relatively quick and easy upgrade to your existing jack:     It's worked pretty well. I definitely had to mess around with finding the right combination of spacers, washers, and locknut pressure that wouldn't bind up the wheels. However, it is a pretty sweet setup and allows me much better control. We live at the end of a half-alley. My garage faces the end so when I need to hook my boat up to the truck, I have to pull it out into my driveway and then swivel it 180 degrees to face towards the street. The handle is what really makes the difference and now the trailer jack wheels don't slide on the asphalt. Has anyone else done this conversion?

I've got a pile of crawlers ready to go - a nice side benefit of all the rain in the metro lately.   At the very least, I hope that the remaining trappers are making some better money off of the higher prices. I would think that it would be a great way for local kids to make some cash. I can see why it wouldn't make for a great way to make a living as an adult.

Went out yesterday with the sunshine. I did find crappies in the shallows on a darker stained lake with Temps at 58 degrees. They had no interest in my baits
