Bass of 2018

ANYFISH2

Recommended Posts

I opened up my by bass fishing season this past weekend with the great company of @Wanderer.

The catch numbers were great by most respects.  Size was a little smaller on average than I had hoped, I kinda bragged up this little gem and size fell a bit short. 17 as approx the max size we boated on Sat.

Fished seem to be in groups concentrated in certain areas, very scattered in between.  Our best action came fishing away from shore, better fish as well.  Plenty of fish were crusing on the shorelines as well they definitely ran smaller though.

Wanderer was able to show me how to work a jig effectively as that has never been a tactic I am proficient at.  Thanks Wanderer.  I tried to show the ease and effectivenss of the Senko.

It all  work well as we probably boated over a hundred fish for the day.

Everyone share your 2018 Bass experiences here, keep us in loop of what is working you!

You and that Senko were dialed in, no doubt about that!  I think if the wind wasn’t as harsh we could’ve explored the deeper water a little better and maybe got the jig bite dialed in on the hens.  Either way it was a fantastic fishing experience.

Some day I’ll try a Senko - maybe. ?

I think you’ll do very well there this weekend.  Thanks again for taking me with.  It was the best day of open water fishing I’ve had for some time, both fishing and partner wise.

Thanks, a day well spent with a good person for sure.

Thanks again for the work you put in at the end of the trip!  Your fishing needs to get in better shape I think!?

Haha!  Based on our conversation at the truck I’m going to edit that comment a teeny bit!  Cuz I know both of us had a workout.  I was still sore yesterday but it was a good sore. ?

Thanks for the edit, thats what I meant to write!!?

Hit the same lake up on Saturday with Isaac and my buddy Chad.  Water temps seemed on the rise and fish more scattered.  Fishing is never really slow on this lake, however the numbers and size were even smaller than the week before.  Lots of 13" fish biggest being 2.5 lbs.

Plastics as always ruled the day, although this day, a 1/8th oz jig and creature bait ruled the day.  Weightless senko run by Isaac was the next best.  Hard baits struggled to pull fish.

Oh come on, that thing is 15", just the camera angle!!?

Nice fish Wanderer!  Thats a pig.

I guess the secret is run muskie baits!!

I caught a few smallmouth on Mille lacs recently including this toad which was 20.5 inches.  Its probably the second biggest smallie I've ever caught.  Its getting tougher out there every time I go though.  The fishing pressure is getting to them.

Anybody else catch a bass yet?! LOL!

I did get one this morning on my Mississippi River shoreline that made me a little excited.  I was running through my Muskie gear and this nearly 21 incher grabbed my Top Raider on her third attempt.  It was pretty awesome watching her try for it.

Spawned out by the way.

Where is a good shoreline to fish on the St. Croix?

I’m sorry Violette but I don’t know much of anything about the St. Croix other than where it is.

It was a great three hours on the lake this afternoon/evening. I am chalking it up to that front skirting the metro.

I caught my biggest bass in quite a few years. Came in at 5.94 lbs, just a toad of a fish. A 4.87 lber, 3 more over 4 lbs, 7 bass in the 3-4 lb range, and two sub 3 lb fish.

I left the lake grinning ear to ear because I know outings like this are rare.

A 22-24+ lb 5 fish limit IS awesome!

Yah, that’s one for the memory bank.

I have been smallmouth fishing in rivers a couple times the past several weeks and its been fairly ridiculous.  The water is so warm its like a bath tub too.  They are just smackin topwaters around wood, in the shade, and near current.

Thanks guys!

My thumbs are feeling it today.

I know, I know.......poor me.

:)

Did pick up a new scale last weekend after being without one for a couple years.

It's cool to confirm that my guestimations about size are pretty accurate.

When it jumped 10ft from the canoe for my first gander at it, I thought 7 lbs  because it was so chunky.

20 3/4 "

6.27 lbs.

It's been a good year for quality fish.

Am I the only one around here catching bass?

?

Finished up my season last week with only one fish caught on that 72 degree day, but it was 5 lbs on the nuts..........

Coupled with my 2nd bass of the year, which was over 5, I sure can't complain about 2018's bass season bookends. ............

Here's to hoping that 2019 is half as lucky as 2018!!!!!

On the South Shore...  The focus for most this past week for resorts and ice fishing outfitters is checking ice conditions.  Things are progressing nicely.  As we remind anglers each and every year, ice conditions can vary significantly.  Consequently,  we typically will not make blanket statements about ice conditions or thickness of ice.  It is best to work through a resort or outfitter who knows the ice conditions on the part of the lake they are working.     The 10 day forecast shows temps staying below freezing and hitting the single digits many days.  Depending upon the wind, this should continue to build up the ice and get things started,   Some spearing and angling for pike has started in areas of back bays.  Work through an outfitter and stay on marked trails as ice conditions still vary, even on the bays.  Naturally, with Lake of the Woods having a robust population of big pike, some nice fish are coming in. As the days go on, resorts and outfitters are continuing to mark their ice roads and venture out further checking ice conditions daily.  Initial reports are showing good ice formation on many parts of the lake off of the south shore.     From many parts of the south shore, there is ice as far as the eye can see.  With cloudy conditions, a satellite image of the entire lake has not been available for a number of days.   On the Rainy River...  The river is iced over.  It certainly isn't ready for any traffic as of yet but the fact it is locked up is encouraging.   Some spearing and angling for pike happening in back bays off of the river.  Once ice thickens, a couple of resorts who fish the river will mark ice trails in their particulate fishing area.  The river has current, it is best to work through a resort or outfitter.   Up at the NW Angle...   The Angle is locked up with ice for the most part.  Fishing isn't happening yet, but resorts and outfitters have started checking ice conditions and the ice is progressing nicely.  Things are on track for a good ice fishing season. Watch the Lake of the Woods Tourism Facebook page or other resort facebook pages for reports and videos of current ice conditions.  At this point, reports are coming in daily. If you haven't made reservations for ice fishing, now is a great time.

Good update.   There has already been a host of idiots walking on the thin ice in the metro, with several rescues taking place. I read that a retired pastor in Duluth also went ice skating on thin ice and died. It's good to see that you're waiting a bit.

It’ll hurt your arms as you’ll have to saw through that thick, thick 12 inches instead of 6-8. 😉

Lots of medium lakes are locked tight, big lakes like trout in colraine, turtle caribou north of Marcell are open. I'd venture small and medium lakes will be good for foot travel and or atv this weekend

thats sounding great. honestly unless we get a pile of snow i am pretty sure the ice will be in great shape by the weekend of the 13-14th.  i spent 10 days at the cabin deer opener...8 days in Wi chasin deer, part of me says i should stay home for a bit, .......but naw that itch is getting worse to hit da ice and throw that fork!!!!!! 😆

I’m seeing reports of up to 6-7 inches in the Brainerd area.  Edward as much as 8 by shore and 4 still out quite a way.   The big lakes might take that hit but I doubt the smaller ones will be affected,  Man, it turned fast this year.  This weekend there will be a ton of people out.
