Did anyone try fishing shallow and have any success. Vermilion seems to have my number and I typically fish deep, so I want to mix it up and try shallow 12ft and under. The girlfriends dad puts on a little tourney this weekend every year, my ego cant take another last place finish ;).

What are the tournament rules?  Do slot fish count?  If so, cast jerkbaits (x-raps/husky jerks/lucky craft pointers/etc.) on shallow rocky points, near shore rock humps, and island saddles.   You'll win!

Each boat is aloud 2 slot fish. That's my plan is try jerkbaits (no confidence) Jigs and plastics and slip bobbers.

We're new to Daisy Bay --- We fished last weekend and only had a little success during the day on Sunday in 30' of water with jigs and minnows.  We got 2 nice 19" fish from shore at night though.  Last night I caught about fifteen 12-14" fish from shore in about a 20 minute period right after sundown.  I haven't figured out how to fish the Daisy Bay area yet so if anyone has advice please let me know.

Do a search on Mark B previous posts.  I believe he lived in daisy Bay Area and posted many times throughout the years on that area.  I’m only a vacationer to the lake but learned a lot about techniques and areas to fish from past reports

Pretty slow walleye weekend for us around Moccasin Point area compared to what we usually do. Managed to put together a fish fry and bring a couple home but had to settle for 14" - 15" to get them. Did get  a couple in low 20" range and I managed to pull in this 31" beauty. Biggest walleye of my life.

If you get a chance to practice off the dock with a jerkbait, do it; you'll be able to see how to manipulate the bait with different cadences.  But more or less it's just jerk-jerk- pause/jerk-jerk-pause/etc.  Pause for a second or three and get it moving again.

Keep it simple with baits as well - a perch colored X-rap is all you need - though I will say I love the Lucky Craft Pointers and my buddy out fishes us all (back of the boat) with a perch colored Strike King KVD jerkbait.  So they all work.

The biggest problem with the early season jerkbait program is keeping the smallies off your line ?.

We're on Daisy Island.  Last night was awesome off the dock.  Had a little shelter from the rain and made many mad dashes to the dock catching fish.  No reason to leave shore when it's like this.

Shoot you don’t need anything more than a rowboat to catch fish all year long. That’s an awesome location. MarkB mentioned banana island a lot and that’s the island(s) just to the west of you.

We’ve had some of our best days within shouting distance of your place. Spring summer and fall.

Vermilion is such a big lake with a lot of great fishing spots, but most of the time you don't need to venture far from your dock to catch fish. They are everywhere.

I had friends that did well trolling cranks in relatively shallow water in Pike Bay, lots of small fish, but they put up a good bunch of fish 14/18"  easy fishing, throw them out and drive...lots of consistent depth water back in there around Duffy Island, etc.  Good luck.

Well, put in some good hours this weekend and had trouble finding fish at first. Nothing was producing except the really deep water bite. Was marking and catching fish in 32-37 feet of water on rainbow chubs. All pretty small fish. Frasier bay seemed to have more active fish vs further west. Water temps were in the 50s now. Tried leadcore in 20 FOW bays too but not a thing. I hope some were able to find some sizable fish!

What a great weekend!  Was up Thurs night - Sunday.  Pretty good fishing over all.  Fished around big bay Friday morning and Sunday morning and caught a lot of smaller walleyes but was able to get a three man limit of sizable eaters after throwing quite a few 10-12 inchers back in the lake.  All pretty deep water 20- 30'.  With this weeks temperatures fish should start moving shallower as the water temp begins to rise.

Anyone catching fish shallow as of yet? We are planning to head up this weekend but lots of work to do around the cabin so was hoping to wet a line off the dock!

Excellent! Thanks for the update Pat. Anyone who is fishing shallow finding better luck in minnows or leeches? Hoping to watch a bobber for a while.

Have been fishing pretty hard since last Thursday. Primarily fishing with Rainbow minnows. Have tried Lindy Rigs, jigs, jerk raps, shads, bobber fishing, you name it. Have fished East and west lake too. Have caught one large perch, one large crappie and one small Walleye. Water temp has rose about ten degrees in the last week so hopefully the bite picks up. If anyone has had better luck than our group, please let me know what we are doing wrong. Beautiful lake and beautiful weather at least!

Sorry to hear you've had bad luck MB.

1.  Maybe just troll around with #5 shad raps until you contact fish.  Pick a nice bay or shoreline where the wind is blowing and go at it. Follow that wind!   2. Low light (dawn and dusk), you should be able to find a lot of fish shallow.  Again, work shallow bays until you find fish.  Or fish slip bobbers/leeches on fishy looking points or shallow rock humps.  If anything, find a couple buoys connected together indicating a shallow reef and toss the bobbers out.  If no bites in 20-30, try the next reef.  3. Have you tried the backside of Pine Island?  It fishes pretty small, it's gorgeous back there, and you should be able to go down any shoreline and catch fish either casting or trolling.  The bays are easy to spot as well and there is some good weed growth in them.  4. Tie on a twistertail or white spinnerbait and just cast anything shallow that looks good.  Chances are you'll run into bass and pike (and walleyes) and boost your confidence a bit.

Something that always stumps me is why anglers won't switch to other species when the walleyes are tough.  Vermilion has great bass, pike, and panfish, and often by switching gears you also learn a little about walleyes along the way.

Good luck to you MB!

There are walleye in this lake?? Totally agree about fishing all species. Folks are still heavily chasing the crappies. I know that the walleye are out and smallies are moving towards shore to spawn. I haven't hit a pike since opener, but haven't targeted them specifically yet. They are all out there just waiting for us.

Thanks for the replies guys. I personally don’t love Walleye fishing but was under the impression that is what “is biting”. Going to see if we can find some bass and northern using lures. Haven’t had much luck on the East part of the lake so maybe going to try our luck on the west end. Hopefully reporting back this evening with better luck. Confidence has taken a hit, but I know you have to keep your head in the game and that’s what I’ll do!

Don’t forget to try some jerkbaits this early and work em slow and if the bite is slow.  Soft and hard bait jerkbaits

Does anyone one know if Manick's been down the Partridge River putting in lifts/docks?

CigarGuy,

Manick has dropped most docks in the area. Boat lifts were in in Ritchie Bay last night. So far they have not got the lifts in our bay. I am expecting to see or hear the barge go by sometime today.

Back to the Fishing Reports-

Water temps on the West end last night were 60 degrees. I picked up 1 19" Walleye on a leech and slip bobber right at dark. Had another bite off of a pike or muskie on a shiner- never felt any resistance on the hook set. I just arrived last night and only had an hour or so on the water.

There are signs of life in the shallows now. Schools of perch and other minnows are swimming in near the docks. It should be a good weekend of fishing.

Good luck

Steve

Thanks.  got up here about 7pm and saw that...bummer. I bought an electric winch, so I can do my dock.  I take back what I was told about them not trying to sell the barge business. On a good note, I fished off the neighbors dock tonight and got a 23-1/4 walleye and a nice crappie. I suppose I better say, we released them both.

Walked today and yesterday, flushed 9, shot at two and got two. Hopefully next year I'll have a dog to hunt with. Still warm up here, skim of ice on ponds. Weather has been nice. Hopefully walk a bit more the next few weeks. Been pretty cautious walking for birds to not interfere with deer hunters. There sure are not the deer hunters there used to be

On the South Shore...  The focus for many this week is the ongoing deer hunting season which is a big tradition in these parts, even for avid walleye anglers.  There were some that either already harvested their deer or are more into catching fall walleyes than hunting.     Those that are fishing are taking advantage of the unseasonably warm weather and excellent walleye and sauger bite that is happening across the lake.  Cold weather is in the forecast in the upcoming days and weeks so that is also getting many excited. The best depths on the south end of LOW are 22-28 feet of water.     Vertical jigging with frozen emerald shiners is catching most of the walleyes, saugers and jumbo perch.  Depending upon where on the lake you are fishing, some slots and big trophies are in the mix as well, but most reports are talking about good numbers of eaters.    Jumbo perch are coming in good numbers this fall which will serve ice anglers well.  Watch out for an occasional pike or even lake sturgeon mixed in with the walleyes.      There are good numbers of walleyes and saugers across the south shore which is setting up nicely for early ice.   On the Rainy River...  There continues to be good numbers of shiners in the river, and consequently, there are good walleyes in the river as well.     Walleyes along with saugers, pike and some sturgeon are coming in up and down the river.  Most walleyes are being caught in 10-25 feet of water in various stretches of the river.   Jigging with live or frozen emerald shiners is the key. Some anglers are also still slow trolling crankbaits upstream to cover more ground and find fish. Both methods are producing solid results. Sturgeon fishing remains strong.  The catch-and-release sturgeon fishing is open into the spring when it changes to the "keep season" on April 24th. Up at the NW Angle...  As temps are getting colder, most are in the woods hunting and not fall fishing, however, for those who bundle up, fishing continues to be excellent.     A nice mixed bag with walleyes, saugers, perch, pike and crappies being caught. Very good muskie fishing with the colder water temps and shorter days.  Some big fish and some good numbers are being caught amongst the islands.  Both casting and trolling is getting it done.

I hunt in the rifle zone so I don't have a need to use a shotgun to hunt deer, but I would be looking at this if there was ever a need to.   There could be state legislation introduced next summer that eliminates the shotgun zone completely.  It has bipartisan support.  Wisconsin removed theirs years ago and MN is usually later to follow.  They've tried to pass it more than once and it came up just short both times.  Probably just a matter of time.

      Screw that, here's whatch need!  😆   Power-Shok Rifled Slug 10 Gauge 766 Grain Grain Weight: 766 Shotshell Length: 3-1/2in / 89mm Muzzle Velocity: 1280
    • Wanderer
20 ga has become a real popular deer round in the last 5 or so years.  The rifled barrels are zinging those sabot slugs with rifle like accuracy out to 100 yards easily.  Some go so far as dialing in for a 200 yard shot but really, by 150 they’re falling off pretty low.   I have a single shot Ultraslug in 20 ga that shoots really well at 100 yards.  Most everyone I know that has bought a slug gun lately has gotten the Savage 220 in 20ga.  Problem can be finding the shells you want.
    • leech~~
My son always bugs me about getting a nice light over-under 20ga for grouse hunting.  I say Heck no, I'm getting a 3 1/2" 10ga so I can put as much lead in the air that I can!!     So, I'm keeping my 12ga.
    • 11-87
That’s almost exactly what I was thinking.  Have slug barrels for both   One for turkey and one for deer.      I have a 20ga mosseberg as well. (Combo came with the scope but never used.   I always liked the 12 better
    • leech~~
Wanderer is right on the money and covered it well.  I was wondering too if you had a slug barrel for one of your guns?  If so you could make that your slug gun with a scope, and the other your turkey gun with the Red dot.  As you can afford it.
    • Wanderer
Kinda depends on if you want magnification or quick target acquisition.   More magnification options and better accuracy with a scope.  You get what you pay for too so get comfortable with a budget for one.  Tasco and Bushnell work but I find they lose their zero easier, have low contrast and don’t gather light well in low light conditions.  That said, I’m still using one I haven’t replaced yet.  Vortex has been the hot brand for the past several years for bang for the buck.  Good products.  Nothing beats Swarovski though.  Huge dough for those.  Burris is another decent option.   There are some specific models for shotgun/slug hunting in the economy brands and bullet drop compensation (BDC) reticles.  Based on experience I’d recommend not falling for that marketing ploy.   Red dots are usually lower magnification and easier to get on target.  Reasonably accurate but don’t do well with definition, like searching the brush for your target.  I put a HAWKE red dot on a .22 for squirrels and it’s been good.  For turkey, that’s probably the route I’d go.     If your slug shots are normally not too far and too brushy, I’d think a red dot could work there too if you’re only buying 1 scope.  You’ll be better off dimming the reticle to the lowest setting you can easily use to not over shine the target and get a finer aim point.   If you don’t have a slug barrel, you might appreciate one of those.  I had a browning with a smoothbore slug barrel that shot Brenneke 2-3/4 inch well.  The 11-87 would well fitted with a cantelever rifled barrel.
