I need some opinions. I need a new bowmount electric. A few years ago we discussed spot lock or pin point and a lot of guys on this forum thought they reacted too slowly and then over corrected so it wasn't very useful on a lake like Vermilion. Anyone have any recent experience? Have they improved at all?

Spot Lock is not the end all, be all.  It is greatly improved in terms of GPS accuracy than it has been with the introduction of the Ultrex, however.  My parents have a Terrova that is about 5-6 years old and its probably what you were referring to in your post in reacting "too slowly."  Other factors can affect a bow mount's ability to use Spot Lock such as current, wind, waves, boat weight, etc.

I agree with gimruis.

My Terrova is at least 5 years old but under the right conditions the spot lock works great.

Wind is the big factor with my 85# thrust motor. The higher thrust motor (36 volt) will probably work even better in the wind.

Newer models are probably much better also!

The 2017 versions of the Terrova and Ulterra that have the Bluetooth connections are much improved. I love the spot lock on my 2017 Terrova. It also has the lift assist and that is not that huge of a concern for me. It does raise the motor up another 4- 6 inches.

I think the spot lock only comes in the I-Pilot or I-Pilot Link.

Happy with my purchase after 1 season of limited use on it.

I got a terrova last year.  I love the spot lock.  Used it all the time for slip bobber fishing.

Last year was our first year with the spot lock feature in our boat, and agree with Jamie. Worked excellent for hovering on reefs while slip bobbering as long as the wind wasn't too bad! It did act a little funky sometimes though; it would swing the boat around at times not necessary.

My Ulterra has spot lock, it's 2 years old and works great for keeping me off the shore when unhooking a fish in the net while in big wind & waves, that's about all it's good for. That being said the new Minnkota Ulterra has a new spot lock feature which is suppose to be more accurate,  it comes with an external GPS puck and it should keep your boat from wondering. I'm thinking about upgrading to the new model.

All of the 2017 and newer iPilot units with Bluetooth come standard with the external GPS antenna (has to be mounted and powered), which gives the Spot-Lock a 5'+/- lock range.  My old Minnkota Terrova was good for about 5-15', which actually worked really good for jigging on reefs.  The new one holds so tight that you don't get to cover any ground except what is right under your boat.

If you buy the iPilot with iLink and have a Humminbird locator, you can slave your Minnkota to the map on the Humminbird.  Awesome feature.  It allows you to draw routes, follow contour lines, set it to off-set shorelines, etc.

I suppose a key is to have appropriate power for your boat with the bigger the better. Being aware that GPS systems are not capable of pin point accuracy, you will always have some movement and depending on day (signal reception) it could be as much as 30'.   Two anchors works best if you can reach the bottom.  I use spot lock when we hit a big fish, are at the beginning of troll and setting up the lines and on calm days jigging or bobber fishing.  It is not great but if you can't anchor, you can't beat it.  Either way, I like the option.

I've had it for 2 years and used it a lot last year. Rigging mid-lake humps/flats and hook a fish, hit spot lock and land the fish to stay on the structure rather than drifting off. Fall fishing crappies, find a good school and hit spot lock to stay over them, very effective. I wouldn't give it up. I wonder if Minn Kota sells the parts to upgrade older units to the better precision.

One other feature that was added in 2017 is “jog”.

Once you spot lock you can jog 5ft in any direction and it will spot lock at the new location.  Nice feature.  I now leave my anchor on dry land and may never use one again.

Thanks for the info....

I bought a Minnkota last year but not with bluetooth. It works just fine on my 165 Navigator when I want to stay in a general area. However, I've learned not to use it near rocks as the wind can swing your boat around and Spot Lock kind of draws a radius around your spot. It moves. I've also found that GPS isn't always accurate on Vermilion in areas. However, I set tracks all of the time to follow a weed line or shoreline. I love setting a track and then letting my boat follow it repeatedly while I pitch topwaters into the weeds.

I'm happy with my upgrade.

We've used it on a 19' ProV side by side with our friends Ranger. It holds the Ranger way better since it is a bit heavier, sits lower in the water catching less wind. Same model motors.

2017 and newer ulterra and terrova are awesome. I had an older version and the new version is way better. Way more accurate and the jog works flawlessly

If it helps the discussion, the new Minn Kota motors with spot lock do have an external puck that must be mounted and powered to a 12 volt source.  They are not a GPS antenna as previously mentioned but an electronic compass.  It’s information is then linked to the motor via blue tooth.  Once paired with the motor, you need to go through a configuration process on the water that involves driving the boat in circles.  A “soft” install is recommended until you determine that your mounting location is ok.  Spot lock will work without it but you need to have it to use the jog feature.  Mounting has some restrictions as the trolling motor, electronics and some major wiring will interfere potentially with the “compass”.  I was surprised to have this when I bought my new Terrova.  I think it is something that is not marketed and frankly avoided in describing the new features of the trolling motor.

That was a better study compared to last winter when they setup the vertical tube nets and tried to release exhausted fish from being studied and expected them to be able to swim straight down a 3' hoop net.     That lake's crappie population from this latest video was pretty deep at 40-50', and no doubt from those depths that is barotrauma for most.  That is deeper than most crappie holes but certainly how some are. However from helping give fish a good release from the 35' and less range and tracking them with live sonar most of them swim at a shallow angle back to the depths and I watch them rejoin the school and be active.  Uncut Angling's video helped counter some of the initial narrow findings.

If you fished with me more often, you'd never have to make this statement...   38" of ice - love it. I'm really going to have to dig around for my auger extension. I don't think that I've needed it in over a decade.   Too bad nobody has a locomotive chugging across the ice to do some logging, like the good old days.

On the South Shore...  Ice fishing remains strong across the south shore of Lake of the Woods out on Big Traverse Bay.  Resorts and outfitters on some parts of the lake have ice roads extending over 16 miles staying on nice schools of walleyes and saugers.  Many fish houses are over deep mud.  Some are on structure.  It is always fishing of course, but overall, February has been very productive for most anglers.   Extensions are being used on ice augers as the ice continues to thicken.  The thick ice this year will be good for the extended ice fishing season Lake of the Woods enjoys with fish houses out through March 31st, walleyes and saugers open through April 14th and a pike season that never closes. Most fishing activity is taking place in 26-32 feet of water.  Anglers are finding a healthy mix of walleyes and saugers, with a good number of jumbo perch in the mix this year.  Some big eelpout are also showing up.  Anglers are reporting plenty of fish for fresh fish frys and usually extra fish to bring home.   The one-two punch of a jigging line and deadstick is the way to go.  On the jigging line, jigging spoons with rattles tipped with a minnow head have been consistent.  Lipless crankbaits and jigging rap style lures also doing well.     Lures with a light have been working well in the stained water.  Please remember, in MN, lures with a light or water activated light can be used as long as the battery is mercury free and the hook is attached directly to the lure and not as a dropper line.     On the deadstick, a plain hook or a small jig with a live minnow 6 inches to a foot off of the bottom.    Some days, mornings are better, other days, it's the afternoons.  There is no distinct pattern, they could come through at any time. On the Rainy River...  The start of the day and end of the day have been best for those targeting walleyes on the river. A jig and minnow or a jigging spoon tipped with a minnow head is also producing some fish. Some big sturgeon being iced by ice anglers targeting them.  It is a catch-and-release sturgeon season currently.   Although ice conditions on the river are good, they can vary significantly due to the current, so anglers should always consult local resorts or outfitters for the most up-to-date safety information and fishing advice. Up at the NW Angle...  Ice fishing has been strong in the islands area of Lake of the Woods. Resorts continue to move their fish houses around, staying on the best schools of walleyes.     Anglers are catching a nice mix of walleyes, saugers, and jumbo perch with an occasional pike or tullibee as well.     Big crappies are still being caught just over the border.  Fish houses are available, check with a NW Angle resort for info on crappie fishing.   Lake of the Woods enjoys an extended ice fishing season with fish houses on the ice through March 31st and walleye and sauger seasons open through April 14th. Perch, crappie, and pike seasons remain open year-round.

Monday was my worst day of winter fishing on Vermilion in the last 4 years.  Caught only one 14" walleye in nearly 8 hours of fishing.  Missed two other bites and was marking very few fish.  Maybe the fish were taking Monday off after a big weekend.   No more water came up on the ice under my house.  Think it was because I haven't banked snow around it for a couple of weeks so the bare ice around the house is getting very thick.  I measured 38" of ice under my house and the Ion barely made it through even with the extension installed.  Needless to say I banked around the house this time.  Another lesson I learned today is don't drill holes if ice is frozen on your blades.  I did that on one hole and it didn't center properly and drilled at an angle on the edge of the opening.  Hope I can correct the location and angle on my next trip up.   Not much change in the surface lake surface conditions.  The drifts may be a little higher and are definitely harder.  There are still a few bare ice spots on the lake.  Very little activity on the lake today.  There are about 3 dozen houses from McKinley Park out to Birch Island.  Another person pulled there house off today, and I am sure many more will pull theirs off this coming weekend.  Only 13 days left of walleye season.

Great looking food. So far not much of a game and I thought the halftime show was worse I've seen.
