Oh freeking Great thanks for posting!  This weekend I will have my 2 grandsons with me for the day 4 & 6. We are going up to check Grandpa's deer hunting area, clear trails and check his trail cam to see what's on it.  Didn't plan on bring a gun as I told my daughter that I wouldn't with them along. Here is what was on my trail cam by my stand last year!!

I think I need to get a pistol for bow hunting this year.  Too many bears and wolves and I don't think I could poke them to death.  Plus, bears can climb trees and ladder stands....makes me nervous.  The cousins have seen several bears on the farm this year and I am over 55, female and hunt alone.

Just something to think about.  In Minnesota, it is illegal to carry any firearm while you're archery hunting, including a pistol for personal protection.  Unless you have a carry permit, then its legal.

Why would it be legal to carry one Bow hunting with a permit?  The whole point is to stop folks from putting a bullet in one and then an arrow once it's down to hide the hole.  Like permit to carry folks are more law abiding?

Wow! Easy!  No reason to think deeper into it.  Why does wanting to carry a handgun with a PTC because you're afraid of bears turn someone into a poacher?  If I wanted to shoot a deer with a gun instead of my bow I'd just go out back with my rifle and shoot one during the season.  Every year I'm out bow hunting on private or public land, it is almost a given that someone will walk right past me with their rifle (most times they don't even see me). One year I had a nice little buck walk right under me that I let walk while bowhunting and less than a minute later the neighbor was shooting at him with his rifle.  I called the DNR right from my stand.  Not everyone is out there trying to do something illegal.  You guys who mention shooting the deer with a gun and then "poking" it with an arrow must've already tried that one.  Who thinks that stuff up?  Shame on you.

I think it would be more difficult, or at least no easier to shoot a deer with a hand gun than a bow for the average hunter.

Now you put a red dot scope on a ported .357 or .44 and your odds go way up, but is that really a hand gun for "protection"?

Shoulder or hip holster your semi auto or revolver with iron sights and I'd argue most hunters would still use the bow even if they could use either.

I Bow hunt also.  Why is there a Law about it if the DNR is not thinking about it happening or already has?  My whole point is being able to go around that law because you have a permit to carry in public?  Can you post the rule that says you can carry a firearm during Bow Hunting, if you have a CAC?

Yes.  The reason for the permit is so you can carry for your protection anywhere you see fit.  Except of course Federal buildings and such.

You sit through a day of lecture about do's and don'ts and what happens to you if you do a don't.  

Then they see if you can even handle your firearm after coaching some skills.  And after all that, you get a nice criminal background check to see if you're one of the good guys - or I guess a bad guy that's been good enough to not get caught.

It precludes firearms laws when in the outdoors because it determines your side arm is nothing more than a tool to protect yourself.  It is not considered a hunting weapon or potential hunting weapon.

Thats it.  That's all it is.  If you feel disenfranchised, go get your permit.

Geez, this is going off like a Silly Town thread!  I know the reason for a permit to carry!  My whole point is if it is legal to carry a fire arm with a permit while hunting Great! Why did the DNR make up a rule that you can not carry a firearm when Bow hunting was the question!

If it's not then making a statement like that could send some folks out in the woods with a gun and bow in error. 

No one has still posted the legal statement they said excises yet?

How I see it is that the MN dnr doesn't want anyone to carry while bow hunting. But with how the statues of CCW are written they don't have any grounds to stop you if you have your ccw. So I am guessing they just said fine write them in and not people who don't have it.

I don't see a problem with it if someone wants to carry while bow hunting they should go get their ccw. If you are really that scared of wolves which rarely ever attack humans and black bears I think there has only been 12 attacks since 1987 in MN you should already have your ccw because if you are afraid of them you should defiantly be afraid of your neighbors dog and the people walking down the street because you are more likely to get attacked by them.

So, yet again, if you want to carry a pistol when your archery hunting, you need a valid carry permit, per the law.  Whether your afraid of zombies, bears, wolves, violent protestors, serial killers, etc, you still need a carry permit in the woods when you're archery hunting.

Can't imagine why?  See Red area of MN DNR Wolf packs map. My buddy also has a cabin below Remer and we have had Wolves on our trail cams.

I came across that too, very interesting.  I haven't seen any of the wolves on my cams with collars so that just goes to show how many are around in the area.  I would love to get a tag if they allow hunting in the next couple years.  By the way, one of the video I got has a wolf chasing a deer up the trail.  Ill see if I can post that footage on here once I get the drive its on

Dang, we'll be in the area this weekend.  I still havnt made up my mind to bring the pooch or not, it would suck without him. Then again it would suck more if our dogs got ripped up..

Well I'm bringing the dog, he likes to go deeper in the woods from us but I'll keep him closer. If these wolves are scared of gun fire I'm probably going to shoot off a round per stop. Call me cautious if you will, if it helps I'm all for it..

That story wasn't the first time I've heard of wolves after hunting dogs.  Of the thoughts that went through my mind, one was I doubt I'll bird hunt wolf country without a side arm anymore.  It's just insurance.

Heck, people think you're sticking your head in the sand if you don't carry extra protection for bears in Alaska.  It was second nature to have our bear defense handy when we were there.  No difference here IMO.

I will say the best non-lethal bear protection I've actually proven to work was a pocket air horn.  Likes the wolves in the story, the bears didn't give a rip about "warning" shots.  They couldn't stand the noise of an air horn though.  It might hurt your pooche's ears too but I bet he'll choose the security he knows (you) over running back into the woods.  The wolves on the other hand should prefer the woods.

Seen 3 wolves on my 4 day grouse hunting trip up near ely
