Morning All,

I will be going to Red Lake with my girlfriend's family next week to hopefully catch some walleye! I have never been before, and was hoping to ask a few questions to broaden my horizon:

1.) What colors usually work best for walleye on this lake? (Red hooks? chartreuse jig heads? any advice would be much appreciated!)

2.) Do rainbow minnows usually work best? or what type of bait should i try and use?

3.) I am unsure what depth walleye will be hanging in on this lake. I heard Red was relatively shallow? is that correct? if so, should i start shallower and just work my ways out?

thanks in advance guys, i really appreciate any advice you could provide. id love To put my lady on some nice fish and keep her interested!

Have a great weekend.

Been fishin URL since the 60's, just not as often now that we have our own place down by Winnie. URL is a stained water lake so your typical dark water colors usually worked best for us. Gold, pink, white. red all worked good for us. We've had good luck more than once with 1/16 oz. "Whistler" jig heads in a variety of colors. With much of a west wind the lake becomes hard to fish(rough), the water clarity is greatly effected too, so don't be afraid to try things that have some thump & flash. Most of the time we used shiners but have had success with chubs. I think 19' is about the max for URL & most of the south shore is very shallow( 2-4'). Where are you staying? They should have info on the recent bite for you. Look for subtle changes in the bottom at the depths they seem to be holding & get away from the crowds. Good luck!

I couldn't answer any better then gunner did. talk to the people where you are staying for the latest info. What is working can change daily or even hourly. Good luck.

Wow, thank you for the wealth of information! i truly appreciate it. I have a couple different rigs that I will try out to see what the fish like.

Also, i will be staying at Big Bog campground on the east side of the lake. Near the Tamarac river.

The most important thing to do before you make plans to drive a long distance to fish up here is to check the wind and wave forecast  any strong wind from the N,NW,W, SW mean some tough fishing.

Terrrrrible fishing on Red this past weekend. Rained Friday evening, boated one keeper walleye. Saturday 2 sheep head and 2 perch. Sunday nothing. Went home Sunday rather than staying till Monday.  Tried absolutely everywhere. Probably wont be making the 6 hour drive again unfortunately lol.

You kind of hit the weather bad this past weekend.  Wind, rain, and more wind not to mention cold fronts moving thru.  I was on the lake my cabin is on in the general area of Red and I had a tough time scrapping together a meal - and I've fished the lake for 15+ years.  Sometimes mother nature throws you a curve and no matter how good the lake is sometimes it doesn't matter.
