Nice. I haven't fished it yet but will get my kayak in there soon. How is the pike fishing in there?

Pike can be good

I seem to get more when I get into the back waters and toss buzz baits over shallow weedy areas or trolling in a little deeper water

If I am taking a canoe or kayak usually put in in St Francis or up in Milaca

Or you could put in at rum river central park and float down to the landing at the Anoka fair grounds.

Im heading out there tomorrow to see what I can get

I have open seats in the future if you ever want to go on a weekend the fiancée doesn't like to fish the river so she would be more than happy to stay at home.

Well me and my buddy went out he ended up with two northerns right away on a mepps #4 then a nice smallie. He the got another northern.

hit some slack back water I found a nice smallie in a deeper hole in the shallows mepps #3

i decided to change to a top water buzz bait hooked into a small one right away then had a huge northern shortly after that took my brand new buzz bait

decided to head back before the storm

river is way low just how I like it

i guess my phone didnt save the nice one i got but here is the smaller one ... Will upload the 2 my buddy got when he sends them to me

Nice smallies dude. I'm gonna have to get my kayak in that river soon. That sucks you lost a buzzbait to a pike.

I've had this obsession with pike since I moved here, probably because we don't have them down South. The way they fight, the hard strikes, and the great tasting meat all contribute to that. And they're everywhere. I've spent so much time Pike fishing I hardly put any effort into smallies but this river seems to be a great place for a yak angler to get after both species.

Ya I love the rum river still learning it but its a good river. Not to mention the smallies are on steroids I. There haha

But ya like I said if you ever want to go out on the rum or target northern on a lake I am game I only have a 14 ft boat its not much but it floats.

Best day on the ice this year.

I want one like this in open water and I want to see it smash a topwater!

I'm game for that one day for sure.

I was out on the Rum 4 times this week. Numbers and size had been good on small plastics up until last night. Numbers still there, but size was way down. I tried a variety of crankbaits, inline spinners, etc but couldn't find what they were looking for.

Anyone catching any crappies or walleyes? I had a crappie on last night but lost it. Tried fishing in the slow shallows and had a few bites, but I think they were small and couldn't get them hooked.

I've caught a few walleyes in the past while fishing smallies, but wondering how I should be targeting them.

I have caught a couple on the outside turn passed the bunker bridge

If you are going up river pass the bunker bridge and those new houses on the right is were kids always swim in the river on the bend go up a little passed that and there is a deeper hole. If you look at navionics it says its "15 ft"

Try pitching jigs into the fallen timber more up river.

Next time I am out I plan on trying to troll cranks or a rap slowly zig sagging up river and see if I can find some.

I usually target Smallies so I have not had a pattern for the walleyes really.

My buddy says if you put in at the central regional park off 7 and go up from there it is better walleye fishing

It's pretty shallow and rocky around Rum River Central Park. I've never seen any boats put in there. You'd want a canoe or kayak up there.

I have ran my 14ft short shaft 9.5 up passed that launch I always targeted smallies but my buddy says walleye is good too on that stretch

But I think right now it would be tough the river is way low

I've been having great luck on walleyes on the rum. Until this recent shallow water. Been getting smallies and pike to. Have had a lot of walleye meals in last few weeks. I shore fish it a lot cause I can't do a kayak with my pinched nerve and don't have a truck to pull my boat. But anyway I was gettin them on spinner rigs with half crawlers. Recent I have been getting them on rippin raps.

Monday was my worst day of winter fishing on Vermilion in the last 4 years.  Caught only one 14" walleye in nearly 8 hours of fishing.  Missed two other bites and was marking very few fish.  Maybe the fish were taking Monday off after a big weekend.   No more water came up on the ice under my house.  Think it was because I haven't banked snow around it for a couple of weeks so the bare ice around the house is getting very thick.  I measured 38" of ice under my house and the Ion barely made it through even with the extension installed.  Needless to say I banked around the house this time.  Another lesson I learned today is don't drill holes if ice is frozen on your blades.  I did that on one hole and it didn't center properly and drilled at an angle on the edge of the opening.  Hope I can correct the location and angle on my next trip up.   Not much change in the surface lake surface conditions.  The drifts may be a little higher and are definitely harder.  There are still a few bare ice spots on the lake.  Very little activity on the lake today.  There are about 3 dozen houses from McKinley Park out to Birch Island.  Another person pulled there house off today, and I am sure many more will pull theirs off this coming weekend.  Only 13 days left of walleye season.

Great looking food. So far not much of a game and I thought the halftime show was worse I've seen.
