For those that didn't know, crayfishing season opened Saturday in Daisy Bay.  Worked our way through 2 lbs. of bacon over the weekend.  Now bring on the real opener.

Is there really a season on Rusty's up there and do the kids catch them with rods?  Really don't know but looks like fun for the kids! :)

Not sure about a season but the kids catch lots of them with a stick, string and a piece of meat tied to the string! These rustys are mean! They never let go of the bait once they grab it!

We use the exact setup Cliff described.  One of them usually runs the net in case they let go during the lift.  They call the big ones "Kings".  Provides hours of enjoyment as there is a never ending supply.

So, do you guys eat them in a boil or.........?

Also, do these kids ever try and go swimming with all the rusty's, or just float above them with a tube?

No boil, usually just go back in the lake after sitting in a bucket for a while.  Some do have to square off in an occasional cage match though.

They swim off the end of the dock where it is 9ft, so no issues with the rustys.  I have never had one latch onto my foot, must not taste as good as bacon.

No season, and folks do boil them.  I recall a discussion of methods on here in the past.

No personal experience since they haven't yet made it to us, and I am not going to be caught with a cooler full of rusty''s in my boat out on the lake. Someone might get the wrong idea.

Del,

Once they reach your end of the lake you will be able to catch a feast right off of your dock!

After you fillet a walleye, put the remains in a minnow trap tied to your dock overnight. It will be full in the morning. My kids do a crayfish boil once a year. They have a blast.  Its become a little tradition.

I wonder how they taste to the store bought kind from down south?

Leech,

They taste the same to me! Only they are a little smaller.

And here I thought going through 2 pounds of bacon meant you were wrapping them in bacon! :P

I am planning on it.  But I am in no hurry.   Got one trap, probably will get a couple more...

I keep finding "clams" (really mussels).   Wondering if they would make good chowder.....(if so nobody is saying so)

Del,

I have heard that some fresh water clams can have poisonous parts in them so have not tried them.

Not sure on this one?????

Cliff

I haven't tried them yet.  I have looked for information indicating they are tasty but found nothing.   As for poisonous, that seems unlikely to me since nothing much in the lake is poisonous.   I figure it is more that they are tough or taste unappetizing...

I tried a few clams years ago and I'm still alive. Taste about like you'd expect so chowder would probably be good. Might want to check the game laws with them though

Dandies! What did those big girls want to eat @Wanderer?

Leeches under a slip bobber drifted over a small shelf off a bigger flat.  Bobber set at 8.5 feet.

Awesome, the eyes are sure prettier up there.  Nice job Wanderer.

Any lengths on them?

Posted

Lengths were a little tough to figure out without stressing the fish.  My board only goes to 24 and that wasn't enough.

I did tare my digital scale with the hoop of my rubber net and weighed em in that.  One was 6; the other 8.4.  I had another 24 incher earlier in the day but didn't weigh it.

We got 1 pike and severa smallies too but let everything go since fish wasn't on the menu this weekend.

We struggled on walleye on Frazer bay this saturday, so sunday morning I started throwing senkos.  Not quite consecutive casts like Wanderer, but i went all morning catching nothing, then caught these two cousins with 3 min of each other, smallie off the point, then the big mouth around the corner in a shallow bay.  18" smallie, 17" LMB. Good fun.

We did get about a dozen walleye on sunday night after the storms chased 15 boats away from the point we were fishing.  Mostly small, but a couple keepers.  Chartruese Jig and rainbows in about 10-12 FOW.  Couldn't buy a bite with a chub.
