Well what a way to break into Minnesota turkey hunting, I got my first double beard!

I scouted my butt off on some public land and found a lot of birds. It took about an hour after flydown and this guy came home.

I smoked one breast on a weber kettle with hickory. The other was made into schitzel. The legs and thighs (STOP WASTING THESE) were braised and used to make a massive pot of soup. Heart and liver were used for a classic liver and onions dish.

Way to go on the double beard!....Scouting pays off

I like the way you cook up the bird....been chirping to other hunters to pluck wild birds, use legs/thighs, hearts, liver etc. Posted a link below that I use for legs/thighs....can try it on your next bird!

I've used that recipe on canada goose legs and it was awesome!

I started to pluck this one but I got a bit too aggressive and ripped off too much skin to be able to roast it so I got the knife out and got everything I wanted.

Awesome way for goose as well I bet.....not sure how close you follow his work but his duck, duck, goose and buck, buck, moose cook books are the best out there for wild game. He is currently working on a small game book to follow the track

Nice job! Glad you were able to connect on one! And on public land too! Glad the scouting paid off I was just up there the week before shed hunting with my niece didn't find one! She still had fun though I showed her a rub and after that she found 4 more I didn't even see must be because she is eye level with them!

Anyway hope you have as good luck deer hunting there as well!

I have his duck duck goose book and its great. I commonly pluck ducks and geese so i can use that delicious fat.

In that book he had a recipe for duck wing soup and I changed it slightly and made a giant pot of soup with the turkey legs and thighs. It was delicious!

Awesome bird,as far as plucking goes I take my big cooler and fill it with hot water then add 2 or 3 gallonsof boiling water. Throw the bird in and close the lid for a minute or two to scauld it and the feather almost fall out.

My wife makes a mean pot pie out of the leg/thigh meat.  Used to throw that stuff away, but man there's a lot of meat there. Never again.

What a difference a day makes.  Fishing was very slow today.  Biggest I caught was only 13 inches.  Marked a lot of fish but couldn't get very many to bite.   The wind was very strong today and did cause a little bit of drifting, but travel is still good on the latke.  Just avoid the snow banks and drifts.  Saw one house get pulled off the lake, and didn't see any new houses come out before I left the lake at 4pm.  Lots of snowmobiles and trailers in Tower.  At least the city and lake will be busy with those.   Good luck fishing if you go out the last weekend of the winter season.

Ice condition didn't change much in the last week as shown in the McKinley Park photo from today.  The holes in my house froze all the way down in the last six days; 40 inches of ice now.  I drilled my two holes 24 inches and cleared the shavings out before reaching water.  Much cleaner way in a permanent house.   Fishing was pretty good today.  Caught two 24" walleyes, including the 5#-7oz fatty pictured.  Also caught a 19 incher.  Best bite was from 11 to noon.  Much better action with chubs than shiners today.  Never tried the pike suckers I had.   Good luck fishing the last weekend this winter.  Going to be very windy Friday, but drifting shouldn't b a problem since there is no loose snow on the lake.  Saturday and Sunday look to be very warm.  Still about 35 houses left out from McKinley Park.

Too bad she’s after big game when she leaves home.  Your one eyed trouser trout might not lure her in. 😉

Haven't owned a hand auger in ages. Three feet of ice, couldn't imagine hand drilling a bunch of holes. I have an old gas auger you can use, if you can get it going 😀.
