The Department of Natural Resources is accepting public comments on an environmental assessment worksheet (EAW) prepared for the Minnesota Valley Off-Highway Vehicle Recreation Area project in Renville County, about 12 miles south of the city of Renville along the Minnesota River.

Renville County proposes the off-highway vehicle recreation area on 278 acres of land in Sacred Heart (South) Township. Current sand and gravel mining will be phased out over 20 years, with reclamation including construction of proposed trails and amenities, and revegetation of mined areas to prairie grassland.

The agency will take comments during a 30-day public review period from April 10 to May 10.

A copy of the EAW is available online at http://www.dnr.state.mn.us/input/environmentalreview/mn_valley_ohvra/index.html. A hard copy may be requested by calling 651-259-5126.

The EAW is available for public review at:

  • DNR library, 500 Lafayette Road, St. Paul.
  • DNR southern regional office, 21371 State Highway 15 South, New Ulm.
  • Minneapolis Central Library, Government Documents, 2nd Floor, 300 Nicollet Mall.
  • Willmar Public Library, 410 Fifth St., Willmar.
  • Olivia Public Library, 405 South Tenth St., Olivia.

The EAW notice will be published in the April 10 EQB Monitor. Written comments must be submitted no later than 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, May 10, to the attention of Bill Johnson, EAW project manager, Environmental Policy and Review Unit, Ecological and Water Resources Division, DNR, 500 Lafayette Road, St. Paul, MN 55155-4025.

Electronic or email comments may be sent to [email protected] with “Mn Valley OHVRA” in the subject line. If submitting comments electronically, include name and mailing address. Written comments may also be sent by fax to 651-296-1811.

What a difference a day makes.  Fishing was very slow today.  Biggest I caught was only 13 inches.  Marked a lot of fish but couldn't get very many to bite.   The wind was very strong today and did cause a little bit of drifting, but travel is still good on the latke.  Just avoid the snow banks and drifts.  Saw one house get pulled off the lake, and didn't see any new houses come out before I left the lake at 4pm.  Lots of snowmobiles and trailers in Tower.  At least the city and lake will be busy with those.   Good luck fishing if you go out the last weekend of the winter season.

Ice condition didn't change much in the last week as shown in the McKinley Park photo from today.  The holes in my house froze all the way down in the last six days; 40 inches of ice now.  I drilled my two holes 24 inches and cleared the shavings out before reaching water.  Much cleaner way in a permanent house.   Fishing was pretty good today.  Caught two 24" walleyes, including the 5#-7oz fatty pictured.  Also caught a 19 incher.  Best bite was from 11 to noon.  Much better action with chubs than shiners today.  Never tried the pike suckers I had.   Good luck fishing the last weekend this winter.  Going to be very windy Friday, but drifting shouldn't b a problem since there is no loose snow on the lake.  Saturday and Sunday look to be very warm.  Still about 35 houses left out from McKinley Park.

Too bad she’s after big game when she leaves home.  Your one eyed trouser trout might not lure her in. 😉
