There is a section of 80 acres of public land just down the road from my house (Island lake area) that was logged over this past winter. They are done logging and there is a lot of "scrap" wood that they left that must have not met their standards. It is actually pretty upsetting how much wood they cut down and left. A lot of it is good firewood and I would like to take a truck load and bring a load home to use for outdoor fires over the summer. To be legal, I believe I need to get a special fuelwood permit from the DNR but haven't been able to find anything about it. I believe this permit allows you to harvest 10-12 cords in one year (obviously way more cordage than I need). Does anybody know anything about these permits and how to obtain one?

We did this down near our cabin and obtained the permit from the county.  I think it depends on who owns the land.  Check with your county permit office.  Our permit cost back then was about $25 or $30 for 8-10 cords.

What are the laws about transporting firewood distances? I was under the impression it was illegal to stop the spread of bark beetles etc etc.

Link to the St. Louis county quarantine regulations. http://www.mda.state.mn.us/plants/pestmanagement/eab/eabquarantine.aspx

As for the logged area, check with the logger if you know who it is. Sometimes they have not closed the contract for that permit and may still have control. If it is state land it is administered by DNR. Not sure if the area your looking at is out of the Cotton or Cloquet office, but suspect Cotton. Either way they can direct you to the appropriate direction. They might give you a salvage permit. Good luck.

We tried this a few years ago and was that all wood left is still the property of the logger. Who just might be thinking of firewood also.or selling it to someone for firewood

You brought up a good point about transporting I often wondering how far some of the logging trucks are coming from and if any of the wood was inspected

As said, really depends on the situation.  I've had salvage permits from both the state and counties.  Sometimes there's wood left on the ground somewhat puposely and strategically.  Sometimes there's a pile that the logger may be coming back to chip later.  Check with whatever entity owns the land and they'll fix you up in most situations.

What a difference a day makes.  Fishing was very slow today.  Biggest I caught was only 13 inches.  Marked a lot of fish but couldn't get very many to bite.   The wind was very strong today and did cause a little bit of drifting, but travel is still good on the latke.  Just avoid the snow banks and drifts.  Saw one house get pulled off the lake, and didn't see any new houses come out before I left the lake at 4pm.  Lots of snowmobiles and trailers in Tower.  At least the city and lake will be busy with those.   Good luck fishing if you go out the last weekend of the winter season.

Ice condition didn't change much in the last week as shown in the McKinley Park photo from today.  The holes in my house froze all the way down in the last six days; 40 inches of ice now.  I drilled my two holes 24 inches and cleared the shavings out before reaching water.  Much cleaner way in a permanent house.   Fishing was pretty good today.  Caught two 24" walleyes, including the 5#-7oz fatty pictured.  Also caught a 19 incher.  Best bite was from 11 to noon.  Much better action with chubs than shiners today.  Never tried the pike suckers I had.   Good luck fishing the last weekend this winter.  Going to be very windy Friday, but drifting shouldn't b a problem since there is no loose snow on the lake.  Saturday and Sunday look to be very warm.  Still about 35 houses left out from McKinley Park.

Too bad she’s after big game when she leaves home.  Your one eyed trouser trout might not lure her in. 😉
