My Alaska trip fell through, so I'm thinking having never been to Minnesota that should be my destination. thinking a week in august. Probably start International Falls or Duluth. We need a resort with sit on top kayaks or

aluminum boats, comfortable lodging without being plush and not ripping our heads off pricewise.  We will target Smallmouth, but if it will hit a lure I will fish for it. any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Well I've traveled all around northern MN. As far as fishing goes lake vermilion in northern MN that's a place that's fits what your looking for. Lodging I'm not sure about. Your staying for a week so anywhere you stay is going to be expensive due to length of stay but a lot of resorts offer discounts for staying so many nights. Hope this helps you narrow your decision.

Advantage of Vermilion over Mille Lacs is that no matter the weather, you can get out on Vermilion and find someplace to fish.   If you are on the downwind side of Mille Lacs, could be tough, especially in a little fishing boat.

But Rainy lake would be good too, as would NW Ontario.

You are right, mille lacs would be the last place you would want to be in the middle of during wind or a thunderstorm.

I am familiar with big water and big wind, and do my best to avoid that combination.

Plus, resorts would love to have you, now that no one goes to them due to the closing of walleye fishing.

Mille Lacs would be good. If the wind is bad, the Brainerd lakes aren't too far away. Rainy Lake (or Kabetogama) would be a really good choice if you want more of a wilderness experience. Big water, but many places you can escape bad weather.

What a difference a day makes.  Fishing was very slow today.  Biggest I caught was only 13 inches.  Marked a lot of fish but couldn't get very many to bite.   The wind was very strong today and did cause a little bit of drifting, but travel is still good on the latke.  Just avoid the snow banks and drifts.  Saw one house get pulled off the lake, and didn't see any new houses come out before I left the lake at 4pm.  Lots of snowmobiles and trailers in Tower.  At least the city and lake will be busy with those.   Good luck fishing if you go out the last weekend of the winter season.

Ice condition didn't change much in the last week as shown in the McKinley Park photo from today.  The holes in my house froze all the way down in the last six days; 40 inches of ice now.  I drilled my two holes 24 inches and cleared the shavings out before reaching water.  Much cleaner way in a permanent house.   Fishing was pretty good today.  Caught two 24" walleyes, including the 5#-7oz fatty pictured.  Also caught a 19 incher.  Best bite was from 11 to noon.  Much better action with chubs than shiners today.  Never tried the pike suckers I had.   Good luck fishing the last weekend this winter.  Going to be very windy Friday, but drifting shouldn't b a problem since there is no loose snow on the lake.  Saturday and Sunday look to be very warm.  Still about 35 houses left out from McKinley Park.

Too bad she’s after big game when she leaves home.  Your one eyed trouser trout might not lure her in. 😉
