Ok wanted to try fishing Tulibee icefishing but just have run out of time, my question is it possible to fish them in the summer? And the best way to do it? Thanks!!!!

I've never herd of any tullibee being caught from open water. Doesn't mean it's not possible but I'm not going to say you can go out and slay em. Hopefully others chime in and answer you question with certainty.

I'very never heard of anyone getting into them.  But I do see them cutting the surface early morning or evening.  Might be able to get a few on a fly rod.

Flyfishing during bug hatches

Well I was thinking that they would be pretty easy to fish for, being that they go deep so would be pretty easy to find, was thinking you could just sit over the top of them and load up a jig or spoon and use a flot.

They eat little bitty stuff.   But them and whitefish should be catchable in summer.  They are eating after all.

I have caught them on Vermilion when the mayflies are hatching in the evening by using a fly rod with small poppers or may fly type dry flies. Just cast to the surfacing fish.

A spinning rod with an Adjusta Float with poppers or flies may work even better.

I caught a whitefish once in the summer. Hammered a mepps spinner while I was fishing for bass. On calm evenings, I see them surfacing. But yeah, flyfishing would be the way to go. Finding schools of them is harder than you'd think. Also, getting such tiny baits down there would be difficult also. Al Lindner did a show a couple years ago on fishing for whitefish in the summer time. Was pretty interesting.

What a difference a day makes.  Fishing was very slow today.  Biggest I caught was only 13 inches.  Marked a lot of fish but couldn't get very many to bite.   The wind was very strong today and did cause a little bit of drifting, but travel is still good on the latke.  Just avoid the snow banks and drifts.  Saw one house get pulled off the lake, and didn't see any new houses come out before I left the lake at 4pm.  Lots of snowmobiles and trailers in Tower.  At least the city and lake will be busy with those.   Good luck fishing if you go out the last weekend of the winter season.

Ice condition didn't change much in the last week as shown in the McKinley Park photo from today.  The holes in my house froze all the way down in the last six days; 40 inches of ice now.  I drilled my two holes 24 inches and cleared the shavings out before reaching water.  Much cleaner way in a permanent house.   Fishing was pretty good today.  Caught two 24" walleyes, including the 5#-7oz fatty pictured.  Also caught a 19 incher.  Best bite was from 11 to noon.  Much better action with chubs than shiners today.  Never tried the pike suckers I had.   Good luck fishing the last weekend this winter.  Going to be very windy Friday, but drifting shouldn't b a problem since there is no loose snow on the lake.  Saturday and Sunday look to be very warm.  Still about 35 houses left out from McKinley Park.

Too bad she’s after big game when she leaves home.  Your one eyed trouser trout might not lure her in. 😉
