I still have one waiting for you if you want to send me your address.  And it's on the house.

I should probably point out my new FM Staff title says "Apparel" so if anyone is interested in something embroidered with the HSO or Outdoor MN logo on it, send me a PM.  I have access to more items than hoodies.

Also, vinyl items may be available in the near future.

Stickers lots of sizes of stickers and decals!

Does anybody know how the ice is on fish lake right now? I know it was pretty poor about 2 weeks ago but I'm thinking things should have firmed up a bit since then. Debating about either taking my wheeler or walking out on Fish lake tomorrow. Any reports would be greatly appreciated.

I haven't been on Fish lake but I'm not far from there.  The lake I'm on is in good shape with solid ice from top to bottom.

I was on a large local lake the other day. Still 20" of good ice where I was but I think some ares with current will have less.

For those wondering, there was about a 4 ft section of open water at the Fish Lake dam on the shoreline right at the access/ramp. It looked like the ice was good beyond the stretch of bad shore ice but I wasn't feeling very confident in trying to get across it. It looked like there were still guys fishing the pontoon bay area out of hi-banks but I didn't give it a shot. I had a specific spot in mind for the day and since I couldn't get to it, I ended up going home and doing some projects around the house.

Save the forum? Why? You all know the reason why it's dead!

There are more resources more than ever if you want to catch fish. the dnr site alone is a gold mine of stocking info, lake maps, etc. When i first moved to duluth 10+ years ago i got no help from anyone, other than Marine General, the bait shops are useless at best and hostile at worst when it comes to information.
Even though i was familiar with the area, having fished in for 30+ years, i had to research, dig, explore, get to know people, ask questions and just  put my time in the water.
The bottom line is too many people have experienced hotspotting and kiss and tell in public forums like this, only to find a place they have birddogged themselves loaded with WI, Ill, or IA license plates.

It's pretty obvious why forums like this are dying everywhere - people giving GPS coords to everything from rock piles to secret beaver ponds, no wonder people stop posting.

This was a great forum. I lurked here long before signing up, before I even owned any ice fishing equipment.

I'd love to share more, but it's not easy to justify sharing useful tips or interesting pics when you see that a thread has 900 views after a couple days yet only a handful of posts from the same handful of guys.

There's a ton of local lurkers on here whose sole goal is to find your favorite fishing spot without having to put in the same amount of work you put in to find that spot.

We've all seen how some so-called sportsman can descend on a spot and decimate it in a matter of days or weeks by filling bucket after bucket. It's a shame, but I think that's how it's going to be. I don't know of any way around that.

Thanks for the update, I completely understand why you choose to post this here instead of a different thread. I haven't been on the ice in WEEKS now, might be retiring the ice gear for the season and waiting for open water pannie season...Or the big lake.

With warmer weather coming hopefully so will the reports.

I've been watching the bay and it seems like things are breaking up out there so I'm anticipating getting out in the next two weeks on the big lake.

Boat is ready. Just need a place to launch. Anybody been to McQuade the last few days?

If the weather cooperates BC and I are planning on getting out on the North Shore this weekend.   With Mcquade and Two Harbors the only options I'm sure things will be tight till the Bay opens up and the South Shore a shorter run.  Be efficient and patient at the landings.  I lot of you know this but I'll repeat, when trolling in a congested area troll with the flow.  We'll be anywhere from on top to 20" down, just have to see what happens.  Lets see how many pink sticks I can manage to lose in one day. :)

Gentlemen, hope things go well this weekend. I, on the other hand, GET to go to St. Cloud for a surprise birthday party for my MIL. I know you all are jealous..

All those watching this thread, and wonder what is happening to the site, just look at the total views over 2000 and to have 55 posts on something nothing to do with fishing is beyond me.

I have never been out on superior.  Do i need down eiggers this time of year? I may head during the week one day to try it out.  I know i would have to look into coast guard regs to make sure i got all necessary safety equipment.

thats great to hear regarding the lake levels!!!!!!

On an off light precipitation today. Hoping the weather this weekend will be nice so I can get out and crappie fish and check the weather. My yard has standing water and the driveway is a mess. Lot of lakes are near standard water levels which is good. Heard they are done stripping eggs on cut foot. Shaping up to be a good opener. Last year fished open water 60+ days and 28 different lakes. Hopefully bump both those numbers up this year
    • rundrave
I don't think its 100% accurate, you are just relying on other average joes to report precipitation. But I think most numbers there are right in the ball park, especially when you see consistency among multiple reports in a general area.   It's probably more accurate than what the weather terrorists say on the news  which usually only reports metro areas. cocorahs is good for getting rural area reports you just might not have as many reports to go off of

Thanks Mike.  I've been looking at bags of it for years but never wanted to chance wasting good meat on it.  I have a gas and charcoal grills, but really love the flavor of charcoal over gas. Most of the time it's if we have time to use one or the other.

On the south end...   The big open water, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  The bays and tributaries of LOW such as Zippel Bay, Bostic Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  The lake is in good shape for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. The many bays and backwaters of the lake have been receiving attention from spring pike anglers.  Some pike have already entered the bays, spawned and gone back out to the lake, but there are still a pile of fish to be had.   The pike season on LOW is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one fish allowed more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. On the Rainy River...  Another great week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  The bite has been very good and lots of fish of all sizes are being boated.     Sturgeon are being caught from Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River all the way to Birchdale, about 42 miles.  There are many boat ramps along the river to make life easy.  Starting from the east going west...   -Nelson Park at Birchdale (About 30 miles east of Baudette) -Frontier (9 miles west of Birchdale) -Vidas (Near Clementson Rapids) -Timbermill Park (East Baudette) -Peace Park (International Drive, Baudette) -Wheeler's Point (mouth of Rainy River)  The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Up at the NW Angle...  The Angle is ice free.  Resorts are gearing up for the fishing opener which is expected to be excellent.  The late ice bite was very good and the walleyes are in good numbers amongst the islands area of the NW Angle.
