How was Laker fishing for all of you on Burntside this year? I never made it.

Without ruffling feathers ;) I'll tell you I only made one trip/two days of fishing and landed one trout.  This has been more the norm for me the past few years on Burntside.

The overpopulation of smelt, the discontinuation of lake trout stocking, and the fact this is probably the heaviest pressured mackinaw lake in all of Minnesota, doesn't bode well for the long term.

I thought it was a terrible idea to stop stocking lakers. If anything, they should have just reduced the number, or switch to fingerlings. But the DNR is trying to save money.

The smelt population needs needs to be reduced significantly. The best way to do that would be to stock coho salmon into burntside. How about that for a bonus fishery? After they put a dent in the smelt population (which they would), maybe then the lakers would be able to sustain themselves.

Anyway, I'm just dreaming out loud now

Finally made it up last weekend and had very little success.  In 2½ days of fishing I caught 2 lakers (27" and 24") and lost another in the hole.  I was marking very few fish.  Lots of people out fishing however.

For what it's worth: I've only heard of one GOOD laker report this season.  This includes both MN and Canadian water.

Hopefully just an off year.

Burtside is just one of those lakes if you don't catch anything it's still great times out there can't beat the scenery!

Exactly! I might try drive around this weekend and explore some new spots. Looks like weather is holding up!

What a difference a day makes.  Fishing was very slow today.  Biggest I caught was only 13 inches.  Marked a lot of fish but couldn't get very many to bite.   The wind was very strong today and did cause a little bit of drifting, but travel is still good on the latke.  Just avoid the snow banks and drifts.  Saw one house get pulled off the lake, and didn't see any new houses come out before I left the lake at 4pm.  Lots of snowmobiles and trailers in Tower.  At least the city and lake will be busy with those.   Good luck fishing if you go out the last weekend of the winter season.

Ice condition didn't change much in the last week as shown in the McKinley Park photo from today.  The holes in my house froze all the way down in the last six days; 40 inches of ice now.  I drilled my two holes 24 inches and cleared the shavings out before reaching water.  Much cleaner way in a permanent house.   Fishing was pretty good today.  Caught two 24" walleyes, including the 5#-7oz fatty pictured.  Also caught a 19 incher.  Best bite was from 11 to noon.  Much better action with chubs than shiners today.  Never tried the pike suckers I had.   Good luck fishing the last weekend this winter.  Going to be very windy Friday, but drifting shouldn't b a problem since there is no loose snow on the lake.  Saturday and Sunday look to be very warm.  Still about 35 houses left out from McKinley Park.

Too bad she’s after big game when she leaves home.  Your one eyed trouser trout might not lure her in. 😉
