I had a trip recently with a group of friends and was quite surprised by something. Has it become the norm for outfitters to charge people who are renting shacks from them a road access fee? I have stayed at many different places and this has never happened before. I am not against road access fees as I know several outfitters and I know how hard they work and gladly pay this fee if I am using my wheelhouse or just going out with my portable. If this has become the norm I wish we had been told this in advance.

I think most work it into their price.

Were you renting from the road operator or a guide using someone else's road? I have heard of having to pay the road pass if the outfitter you work with doesn't have their own road. Cookie mentions it in his updates quite often, since he uses/helps with Hillman's road.

Renting from the road operator

As far as I know every vechicle at every access has to pay a road fee .

Last year the wife and I rented a sleeper from cookie. Went out on hillmans road and paid hillmans an access fee. Had no issues with it.

We also rented a cabin from Highbanks and they didn't outright charge an access fee but like leech said could of been part the cabin rental! This was quite a while back so not sure what they do now.

You are paying for it one way or another it is worked in the rental fee or you pay at the road I guess its a matter of preference. Places I go at milacs always had the road pass "included"

I think when I rented from up north rental on red I had to buy a pass going out of rogers.

Beacon Harbor it was included

This is Bs I've never had to pay a acsess fee any where across the state when renting a shack only when using my own gear the hundreds of dollars a person spends for to rent ice house  should be more then enough to cover a road fee if it's an outfitter using someone else's road system they should have it worked out with the road operator  on their end and not charge you  I mean it's just a Fishhouse they're charging more per night then a hotel room

True, but a lot of those rental houses are nicer than some hotel rooms I've been it!

Plus, I've never caught any fish in a hotel room:)

I agree tho...the road pass should be included, it's just easier.

Since my outfitter doesn't use roads, I don't have to worry about it!  :)

What a difference a day makes.  Fishing was very slow today.  Biggest I caught was only 13 inches.  Marked a lot of fish but couldn't get very many to bite.   The wind was very strong today and did cause a little bit of drifting, but travel is still good on the latke.  Just avoid the snow banks and drifts.  Saw one house get pulled off the lake, and didn't see any new houses come out before I left the lake at 4pm.  Lots of snowmobiles and trailers in Tower.  At least the city and lake will be busy with those.   Good luck fishing if you go out the last weekend of the winter season.

Ice condition didn't change much in the last week as shown in the McKinley Park photo from today.  The holes in my house froze all the way down in the last six days; 40 inches of ice now.  I drilled my two holes 24 inches and cleared the shavings out before reaching water.  Much cleaner way in a permanent house.   Fishing was pretty good today.  Caught two 24" walleyes, including the 5#-7oz fatty pictured.  Also caught a 19 incher.  Best bite was from 11 to noon.  Much better action with chubs than shiners today.  Never tried the pike suckers I had.   Good luck fishing the last weekend this winter.  Going to be very windy Friday, but drifting shouldn't b a problem since there is no loose snow on the lake.  Saturday and Sunday look to be very warm.  Still about 35 houses left out from McKinley Park.

Too bad she’s after big game when she leaves home.  Your one eyed trouser trout might not lure her in. 😉
