Citizens interested in learning about or commenting on Minnesota Department of Natural Resources strategies for managing Finland area lakes and streams have until Tuesday, Feb. 28 to ask questions or submit comments.

Management plans describe the past, present, and desired future conditions of the water resources. The plans identify specific management activities planned for that lake or stream in the next five to 20 years.

Every year DNR fisheries staff prepares or revises individual lake management plans for several waters in each management area. In the Finland area, plans for the following lakes and streams will be reviewed.

Lakes located in Cook County:

  • Elbow Lake (part of the Timber-Frear loop of lakes).
  • Mesaba Lake.
  • Phoebe Lake.
  • Wine Lake.

Lakes located in Lake County:

  • Comfort Lake.
  • Cross River Lake.
  • Hare Lake.
  • Hide Lake.
  • Norway Lake.
  • Sapphire Lake.
  • Scott Lake.
  • Short Lake.
  • Sink Lake.
  • Sundown Lake.
  • Twentythree Lake.
  • Wadop Lake.
  • Watonwan Lake.

People can review current plans and draft plans for lakes in the area as well as recent fish population assessment information at the DNR’s Finland area fisheries office, 6686 Highway 1 Box 546 in Finland. Office hours are 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Individuals also may call 218-353-8855 or email [email protected] to have an electronic copy of the management plan emailed to them.

Public comments on lake management plans will be taken through Friday, Feb. 28. Comments may be submitted via mail or e-mail. Suggestions for management of any of the other lakes and streams in the Finland area are welcome at any time and will be considered when those plans are due for review.

What a difference a day makes.  Fishing was very slow today.  Biggest I caught was only 13 inches.  Marked a lot of fish but couldn't get very many to bite.   The wind was very strong today and did cause a little bit of drifting, but travel is still good on the latke.  Just avoid the snow banks and drifts.  Saw one house get pulled off the lake, and didn't see any new houses come out before I left the lake at 4pm.  Lots of snowmobiles and trailers in Tower.  At least the city and lake will be busy with those.   Good luck fishing if you go out the last weekend of the winter season.

Ice condition didn't change much in the last week as shown in the McKinley Park photo from today.  The holes in my house froze all the way down in the last six days; 40 inches of ice now.  I drilled my two holes 24 inches and cleared the shavings out before reaching water.  Much cleaner way in a permanent house.   Fishing was pretty good today.  Caught two 24" walleyes, including the 5#-7oz fatty pictured.  Also caught a 19 incher.  Best bite was from 11 to noon.  Much better action with chubs than shiners today.  Never tried the pike suckers I had.   Good luck fishing the last weekend this winter.  Going to be very windy Friday, but drifting shouldn't b a problem since there is no loose snow on the lake.  Saturday and Sunday look to be very warm.  Still about 35 houses left out from McKinley Park.

Too bad she’s after big game when she leaves home.  Your one eyed trouser trout might not lure her in. 😉
