Questions about tip ups for walleye

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone, picked up a frabil insulated tip up last weekend and I want to use it for a set line for walleyes when I want to set up another line in different depths. So I put about 100 years of 20 pound braid tip up line on it. My question is what do I use for my leader? I've herd mono and flouro work good but I don't know which is best? And as far as hooks go what to you guys use? Single red hook? Treble? Sure set? Thanks!

I use about a 6' leader of 10lb flouro tied to my main line with a small barrel swivel. As far as hooks go I don't use just one. I prefer a treble of some sort, usually a small glow spoon. If it's a single hook I lean towards bigger is better, but also in glow. Set it up at your desired depth and don't just forget about it. Check it, move it, check it, move it. You can cover a good amount of water if you aren't lazy about it. Also I use just a simple bobber tie for my depth marker instead of those little bobbers. No real reason why that's just what I'm used to. Good luck, half the fun is learning what works best for you.

I have had good luck with a #4 red hook. About 5-6' of 10lb mono and tie the hook directly to the line. Hook the minnow along the back.

Thanks guys that's what I was looking for!

So as far as live bait rigging what works best? Shiners? Suckers? Fatheads? As far as this time of year goes.

I've been using shiners or suckers but have been doing better with the suckers so far this year. Small suckers

I would also suggest small sucker, I also had good luck with just a crappie minnow on the hook. Depends on the lake really.

I use about 100feet of 30# Sufix Metered tip-up braid, add a medium sized swivel, 6' of 10# Sufix mono, and a size 6 red treble hook.

Best minnow bait depends upon what lake you are fishing on. On Vermilion I usually use a 4" to 5" sucker or shiner minnow.

Position your bait about 12" to 18" off of the bottom.

Thanks guys I appreciate the help. Any one have any input on what to use on like gull lake? Sounds like suckers are the ticket right now.

Here's a good tip from these guys. I love watching their videos.

So looking like for gull lake a 2 1/2 to 4 inch shiner should work great! Looking at the forage in the lake I think shiners would work better over suckers.

Thanks for the help everyone was able to get every thing rigged last night. Hopefully can get out in the near future and see what happens.;)

Use the more sensitive trigger side to put the flag under too. Its the one with the diagonal cut

And always set it on the ice with the wind blowing the flag into the shaft or you'll be resetting it often.

Good tip Hawg! I have seen guys running to a wind tripped flag many times! Always face the flag down-wind.

Thanks for the tip! Will save a run.

Cliff, I decided to give your setup a try. How do you rig your minnows? In front of the dorsal or behind?

FM,

I hook the minnow under the center of the dorsal fin or at times just in front of the fin with one hook of the treble hook.

Thanks Cliff!

How did you fare last weekend?  I'm assuming you fished the extravaganza and maybe stayed overnight?

Nope! Haven't went for the last couple years. I mainly fish Gull or North long for Eyes but have done good out on gull this year thats why I asked. Always stay clear of gull during the extravaganza weekend!

What a difference a day makes.  Fishing was very slow today.  Biggest I caught was only 13 inches.  Marked a lot of fish but couldn't get very many to bite.   The wind was very strong today and did cause a little bit of drifting, but travel is still good on the latke.  Just avoid the snow banks and drifts.  Saw one house get pulled off the lake, and didn't see any new houses come out before I left the lake at 4pm.  Lots of snowmobiles and trailers in Tower.  At least the city and lake will be busy with those.   Good luck fishing if you go out the last weekend of the winter season.

Ice condition didn't change much in the last week as shown in the McKinley Park photo from today.  The holes in my house froze all the way down in the last six days; 40 inches of ice now.  I drilled my two holes 24 inches and cleared the shavings out before reaching water.  Much cleaner way in a permanent house.   Fishing was pretty good today.  Caught two 24" walleyes, including the 5#-7oz fatty pictured.  Also caught a 19 incher.  Best bite was from 11 to noon.  Much better action with chubs than shiners today.  Never tried the pike suckers I had.   Good luck fishing the last weekend this winter.  Going to be very windy Friday, but drifting shouldn't b a problem since there is no loose snow on the lake.  Saturday and Sunday look to be very warm.  Still about 35 houses left out from McKinley Park.

Too bad she’s after big game when she leaves home.  Your one eyed trouser trout might not lure her in. 😉
