HI ... I was out on a Lake Saturday Morning and two guys I noticed were catching nice Crappies hole hopping with electronics of coarse.  Finally after a bit from a semi far distance (far enough to not be able to see color but know it was the vertical spoon ones) I asked what they were using as they were packing up.  "Forage minnows no bait" one said.   So my question/s is?   Has any one fished Crappies with these?  I am a pug bug plastics guy here for Pan fish.  What particular colors has anyone had success with?   I am assuming the smaller spoon but I see they come with treble hook and or single hook?

Any particular color and size?  They have a single hook and triple hook kind in the vertical style and jigging one in the vertical jig style?

I have used the forage minnow and machow minnow several times to pick up bigger fish in a school of small fish. I have a lake close to my home full with stunted panfish and I have tipped a smaller forage minnow with waxies, minnow head etc to pick up crappies. Some times it takes some experimenting if it needs to be tipped with anything at all.

Works great for SD jumbo perch as well.

Gold perch & Silver shiner in 1/16 oz, for me. I have a couple of each, single hook/jig & treble hook/spoon but haven't gave them an honest shot yet.

Those are easily my favorite panfish spoon. I use 1/16 for crappies and 1/32 for bluegills. I also modify them with a #8 or 10 single hook instead of the treble. It works much better for threading on some plastics, namely a Gulp waxie or a Clam Maki. On occasion, I will thread a real waxie on there.

1/8 oz Lindy Frostee Spoons in glow red are a killer choice too, sometimes you won't need bait and sometimes you will. When they are preferring bait I'll throw on a few waxies, a minnow head, or a whole minnow.

I use forage minnows and other types of jigging spoons also. Usually tipped with minnow head or waxies.

What a difference a day makes.  Fishing was very slow today.  Biggest I caught was only 13 inches.  Marked a lot of fish but couldn't get very many to bite.   The wind was very strong today and did cause a little bit of drifting, but travel is still good on the latke.  Just avoid the snow banks and drifts.  Saw one house get pulled off the lake, and didn't see any new houses come out before I left the lake at 4pm.  Lots of snowmobiles and trailers in Tower.  At least the city and lake will be busy with those.   Good luck fishing if you go out the last weekend of the winter season.

Ice condition didn't change much in the last week as shown in the McKinley Park photo from today.  The holes in my house froze all the way down in the last six days; 40 inches of ice now.  I drilled my two holes 24 inches and cleared the shavings out before reaching water.  Much cleaner way in a permanent house.   Fishing was pretty good today.  Caught two 24" walleyes, including the 5#-7oz fatty pictured.  Also caught a 19 incher.  Best bite was from 11 to noon.  Much better action with chubs than shiners today.  Never tried the pike suckers I had.   Good luck fishing the last weekend this winter.  Going to be very windy Friday, but drifting shouldn't b a problem since there is no loose snow on the lake.  Saturday and Sunday look to be very warm.  Still about 35 houses left out from McKinley Park.

Too bad she’s after big game when she leaves home.  Your one eyed trouser trout might not lure her in. 😉
