I currently have a Fl-22, but have been interested in switching to the helix 5 or the helix 7. I'm curious if anyone has any insight on this system or advice? I use a lot of lipless crankbaits for walleye fishing and think the helix might give me more info on what's going on down there and in theory help catch more fish. I have heard there is a slight delay on the helix, wondering if anyone on here cares to weigh in on the flasher vs sonar argument!! Thanks for any and all info regarding this topic.

Primary use is on the hard water

My buddy has the 5 w/GPS. When you combine it with a lakemap chip it's a really sweet set-up for ice fishing as you can pinpoint spots on lakes and mark your location for the next time you're out.  I don't know anything about the sonar vs. flasher issue or if there is a slight delay. All I know is I want one.

Also, there are down imaging and side imaging versions available, and ones with and without GPS. Be sure you take that into consideration when you're shopping. I've gotten excited about some pretty good deals I've seen on the Helix 5, only to realize it doesn't have GPS. If you're going to use your for ice fishing I think you would want the GPS version.

Thanks for the info getanet- I can't believe some of the deals I'm seeing in the helix either. I feel like the helix is better suited to the kind of fishing I do

H'bird has  new stuff in the works.  A new unit coming out in March called Solix.  Might be one reason you are seeing some good deals

The Helix 5 gives you the option to view different screens. The view button option shows separate flasher screen, sonar , gps , others. Screen views will run side by side in different combinations, but flasher screen only works by itself. Great little unit. I use mine for gps . Ram mount on handlebar

What a difference a day makes.  Fishing was very slow today.  Biggest I caught was only 13 inches.  Marked a lot of fish but couldn't get very many to bite.   The wind was very strong today and did cause a little bit of drifting, but travel is still good on the latke.  Just avoid the snow banks and drifts.  Saw one house get pulled off the lake, and didn't see any new houses come out before I left the lake at 4pm.  Lots of snowmobiles and trailers in Tower.  At least the city and lake will be busy with those.   Good luck fishing if you go out the last weekend of the winter season.

Ice condition didn't change much in the last week as shown in the McKinley Park photo from today.  The holes in my house froze all the way down in the last six days; 40 inches of ice now.  I drilled my two holes 24 inches and cleared the shavings out before reaching water.  Much cleaner way in a permanent house.   Fishing was pretty good today.  Caught two 24" walleyes, including the 5#-7oz fatty pictured.  Also caught a 19 incher.  Best bite was from 11 to noon.  Much better action with chubs than shiners today.  Never tried the pike suckers I had.   Good luck fishing the last weekend this winter.  Going to be very windy Friday, but drifting shouldn't b a problem since there is no loose snow on the lake.  Saturday and Sunday look to be very warm.  Still about 35 houses left out from McKinley Park.

Too bad she’s after big game when she leaves home.  Your one eyed trouser trout might not lure her in. 😉
