What area of the lake would you guys consider the best for big pike... I'm bringing my buddy down there Saturday and if the eyes aren't cooperating, we might try for some pike... We'll be releasing anything we catch. Thanks for any input

Now that they opened spearing back up on Mille Lacs big pike are few and far between sadly.

Lots of big pike in Mille Lacs, I would try the SE side of the lake, I've had decent luck there. Spearing has only been open for 2 years, I don't think it's going to effect the numbers of big pike in this lake.

The Gator Hole in Wahlkon Bay is usually a good place to start.

After the first spearing season the DNR reported that they estimate 25% of the trophy pike in the lake were harvested by spearing.  I would say that is going to have a serious affect on the trophy pike population.   Judging by the number of spear houses in the bays I don't doubt that estimate.  Spearing was opened due to the walleye issue even though the DNR does not think the trophy pike are causing the issue....makes a lot of sense..   It will be sad if one of the last remaining trophy pike lakes in the state gets decimated.  I'm in no way anti-spearing but hopefully the spearers have some restraint.

Good luck DLD.

I would say Pike fishing got noticeably worse after the first year of spearing.  Used to catch lots of big pike while musky fishing..  I didn't catch a single one last year.  Makes me sad and angry, to be honest.

Caught a 33 and 36" on the rocks this weekend. I've never been successful targeting them. But always seem to catch some here and there.

What a difference a day makes.  Fishing was very slow today.  Biggest I caught was only 13 inches.  Marked a lot of fish but couldn't get very many to bite.   The wind was very strong today and did cause a little bit of drifting, but travel is still good on the latke.  Just avoid the snow banks and drifts.  Saw one house get pulled off the lake, and didn't see any new houses come out before I left the lake at 4pm.  Lots of snowmobiles and trailers in Tower.  At least the city and lake will be busy with those.   Good luck fishing if you go out the last weekend of the winter season.

Ice condition didn't change much in the last week as shown in the McKinley Park photo from today.  The holes in my house froze all the way down in the last six days; 40 inches of ice now.  I drilled my two holes 24 inches and cleared the shavings out before reaching water.  Much cleaner way in a permanent house.   Fishing was pretty good today.  Caught two 24" walleyes, including the 5#-7oz fatty pictured.  Also caught a 19 incher.  Best bite was from 11 to noon.  Much better action with chubs than shiners today.  Never tried the pike suckers I had.   Good luck fishing the last weekend this winter.  Going to be very windy Friday, but drifting shouldn't b a problem since there is no loose snow on the lake.  Saturday and Sunday look to be very warm.  Still about 35 houses left out from McKinley Park.

Too bad she’s after big game when she leaves home.  Your one eyed trouser trout might not lure her in. 😉
