Hello everyone, I'm hoping for a little help. I'm heading up to the far northeastern corner of Lower Whitefish Lake in a couple of weeks for an annual guys fishing weekend. Does anyone know if there are any winter accesses on that side of the lake such as a resort? Not looking to drive vehicles out, just snowmobiles. We are renting a cabin that is up on a hill so access to the lake is less than ideal in that respect. We've heard you can access Rush lake and go out to Whitefish from there via the channel that goes between the two points. However, I'm concerned about the ice on the channel. Anyone have experience with this?

Thank you.

Yeah. Do not attempt go through the channel from rush to whitefish. Danger! Best bet is to get on rush, which you can do from county road 16. You can jump across 16 from cross as there is a ramp there now Then follow the marked snowmobile trail that takes you to the west side of rush. The trail jumps over the road by Boyd lodge. Now you are on Whitefish and you are good to go.

Another option is to go out the Trout lake access and go through the channel into whitefish. I haven't been on trout yet this year so I can not vouch for the ice thickness. If you go that route, hug the shoreline when going through the channel. Many people do it.

Good luck!

Trout lake access would be the fastest way on to whitefish. Trout Lake is safe for snowmobile travel now. Good Luck fishing.

Any info on the actual ice thickness or snow cover on trout?  I was thinking about heading that way this weekend.

Hey, Here a quick update on actual ice thickness or snow cover on trout. 14 inchs of ice pressure ridge out there. if you are  on a snowmobile if traveling fast on it watch for it. Truck or car i do not recommend on trout with pressure ridge. And yes i have been on the whitefish chain this year in truck. just not on trout. just my 2 cents

What a difference a day makes.  Fishing was very slow today.  Biggest I caught was only 13 inches.  Marked a lot of fish but couldn't get very many to bite.   The wind was very strong today and did cause a little bit of drifting, but travel is still good on the latke.  Just avoid the snow banks and drifts.  Saw one house get pulled off the lake, and didn't see any new houses come out before I left the lake at 4pm.  Lots of snowmobiles and trailers in Tower.  At least the city and lake will be busy with those.   Good luck fishing if you go out the last weekend of the winter season.

Ice condition didn't change much in the last week as shown in the McKinley Park photo from today.  The holes in my house froze all the way down in the last six days; 40 inches of ice now.  I drilled my two holes 24 inches and cleared the shavings out before reaching water.  Much cleaner way in a permanent house.   Fishing was pretty good today.  Caught two 24" walleyes, including the 5#-7oz fatty pictured.  Also caught a 19 incher.  Best bite was from 11 to noon.  Much better action with chubs than shiners today.  Never tried the pike suckers I had.   Good luck fishing the last weekend this winter.  Going to be very windy Friday, but drifting shouldn't b a problem since there is no loose snow on the lake.  Saturday and Sunday look to be very warm.  Still about 35 houses left out from McKinley Park.

Too bad she’s after big game when she leaves home.  Your one eyed trouser trout might not lure her in. 😉
