I want to buy some type of electric auger set up.  I have 18v Milwaukee drill and hand auger so leaning towards the clam conversion kit.  But I have not seen one in action.  I like the Ions but the price is high and the replacement batteries cost a fortune.

Any input on the clam kits or others?

Hands down, k-drill w the Milwaukee brushless. Very light and very, very fast.

Not sure which one style it is but I would check it out

@Rick G do you have the 6 or 8 inch

Nick, I run the 6in

If you got the cash, and can find one....the new ion x5 is pretty sweet.

Got a chance to play with one recently, I was impressed with it....but can't see myself forking out that kind of cash...lol

I am just fine with my clam drill plate and 6 inch auger. I am still trying to find my 7 inch lazier hand auger if I go to Mille lacs

I looked at those Ions also and the cost made me slow down on grabbing it. Almost got one but heard about the clam plate setup. Works ok for me. Not as slick as that k-drill. If I had to do it all over again, would probably get the k. but I dont have a time machine so .... :)  I really like the clam over my old lazer mag.

I have the 6in Nils on order from Cabellas (they are back ordered).  I don't have as nice of a hammer drill as the Milwaukee, but I think it will be fine for my needs.  I might add the drill plate at some point, but I don't think I need it to start.  I couldn't justify the extra $100 for the K Drill over the Nils, although it looks nice.

Strikemaster Lithium Lazer if you want 8" holes. Very happy with mine.

CJH,  you won't need the 2704 Milwaukee for a 6" Nils and for that matter you won't need the Clam Plate either.

The Nils requires less torque then any other auger and its speed of cut is #1.

600 in lbs of torque with 4 ah lithium ION battery will suit you just fine.

If you ordered the Nils Convertible you'll be all set otherwise you'll need to get a drill adapter.

Ice Master can be found on epay and some Cabela's Or get yourself a Nils Drill adapter.

I did order the Convertible and I have a few 4ah Lithium batteries, so I think I am all set.  I am not planing on getting the drill plate at this point, going to go with the hammer drill + handle and see how it goes.  Only reason I would get the drill plate is if I felt it would give me more stability.  Thanks for the feedback/info!!

My wife just bought me the Strikemaster Lithium Lazer 10" for our Anniversary.  I drilled 6 holes in 5 minutes, no smoke, no mixing gas, and no oil leaks.  It is only 3 days old, so not sure if I will have issues, but so far, so good.

What a difference a day makes.  Fishing was very slow today.  Biggest I caught was only 13 inches.  Marked a lot of fish but couldn't get very many to bite.   The wind was very strong today and did cause a little bit of drifting, but travel is still good on the latke.  Just avoid the snow banks and drifts.  Saw one house get pulled off the lake, and didn't see any new houses come out before I left the lake at 4pm.  Lots of snowmobiles and trailers in Tower.  At least the city and lake will be busy with those.   Good luck fishing if you go out the last weekend of the winter season.

Ice condition didn't change much in the last week as shown in the McKinley Park photo from today.  The holes in my house froze all the way down in the last six days; 40 inches of ice now.  I drilled my two holes 24 inches and cleared the shavings out before reaching water.  Much cleaner way in a permanent house.   Fishing was pretty good today.  Caught two 24" walleyes, including the 5#-7oz fatty pictured.  Also caught a 19 incher.  Best bite was from 11 to noon.  Much better action with chubs than shiners today.  Never tried the pike suckers I had.   Good luck fishing the last weekend this winter.  Going to be very windy Friday, but drifting shouldn't b a problem since there is no loose snow on the lake.  Saturday and Sunday look to be very warm.  Still about 35 houses left out from McKinley Park.

Too bad she’s after big game when she leaves home.  Your one eyed trouser trout might not lure her in. 😉
