Looking for ice conditions on Crosby area lakes.  My son and I try to come up every year to our hunting shack for our Brthday fishing trip (weekend of January 14).  Are people driving out?  I have 1/2 ton and 17' shack.  Any help would be appreciated

I was on and around some Aitkin area lakes over the weekend, and suspect the ice conditions would be pretty uniform in the whole area. I fished Cedar on Sunday, and although I saw a small compact car on the ice there, relatively close to shore, I would not have driven on the lake. Ice depths I found were variable from 12 to 14". I was on Hanson, Monday, and ice was about the same in both basins, 12 to14". There was no truck traffic that I saw on Farm Island, Hanging Kettle, Ripple, Rabbit, Dam, Sissabagama, or Nord.

All that said, given the temps we have now, and the extended forecast, things should set up nicely by the coming weekend. I think vehicle traffic will commence everywhere by the weekend, Mille Lacs included.

Be safe, check often, and have a great time with your Son

Good luck.

I appreciate the info.  Yeah, I am hoping this cold spell puts the ice thick enough for me to be brave enough.  Will probably have the 8 year old grandson along this year as well.

I was a little shocked to see truck and wheelhouse traffic on Alexander on Monday but there was about 13-14 inches where we fished.

I know it's not Crosby but like already mentioned, conditions seem pretty uniform in the area and we're pretty cold right now.

I'm now that guy with the 1 ton and 18 foot wheelhouse that would probably be driving out on the 14th if I were able to fish that weekend.

Up a bit father near Emily/Xlake we had 11" last Friday, and I bet there is at least 14" by now. I'm just on wheelers and sleds, but will likely drive half ton out next week no problem. Good luck!

I plan to test drill before driving out unless I see numerous others out.  Thanks for the update

What a difference a day makes.  Fishing was very slow today.  Biggest I caught was only 13 inches.  Marked a lot of fish but couldn't get very many to bite.   The wind was very strong today and did cause a little bit of drifting, but travel is still good on the latke.  Just avoid the snow banks and drifts.  Saw one house get pulled off the lake, and didn't see any new houses come out before I left the lake at 4pm.  Lots of snowmobiles and trailers in Tower.  At least the city and lake will be busy with those.   Good luck fishing if you go out the last weekend of the winter season.

Ice condition didn't change much in the last week as shown in the McKinley Park photo from today.  The holes in my house froze all the way down in the last six days; 40 inches of ice now.  I drilled my two holes 24 inches and cleared the shavings out before reaching water.  Much cleaner way in a permanent house.   Fishing was pretty good today.  Caught two 24" walleyes, including the 5#-7oz fatty pictured.  Also caught a 19 incher.  Best bite was from 11 to noon.  Much better action with chubs than shiners today.  Never tried the pike suckers I had.   Good luck fishing the last weekend this winter.  Going to be very windy Friday, but drifting shouldn't b a problem since there is no loose snow on the lake.  Saturday and Sunday look to be very warm.  Still about 35 houses left out from McKinley Park.

Too bad she’s after big game when she leaves home.  Your one eyed trouser trout might not lure her in. 😉
