Only thing that concerns me so far with the new owner, is it sounds like he came up with a pile of cash and bought up a bunch of properties in Ely and around Vermilion. Hope he knows what he’s doing!

Here's what I know: New owner is one of my cabin neighbor's daughter and her husband. They appear to be financial advisers in Minneapolis and are the owners of the new LLC's that were set up for the Landing, Moosebirds, and The Boat House. Neighbor's son (ex-military guy) was recently living in Ely, and I'm assuming he's going to be doing the day-to day operations. Hopefully someone in their group has some restaurant management experience! Seems like a lot to handle all at once!

We will certainly give them a chance, unless they screw it up totally before we have a chance.

Also hope the Landing works out with the new management. There sure is a need for this type of Lake access food and beverage on this awesome lake . I encourage all to give it a try , I know I will ..

Agreed Bigfatbert! The closest to our location (Frazer/Smarts) is Wolf Bay and we arent too fond of their offerings, set up, etc....We do make the trek to Vermilion Club 5 or 6 times a summer, which we always enjoy but always dicey getting a boat slip.....Wish there was a closer options.....

My personal experience with one of the owners -- I don't know which one -- was extremely positive. One of them plowed open the public landing so that I could pull my boat out of the lake after the 2ft blizzard in Nov'2016. He was very nice and helpful. On the other hand, I couldn't stand what they did to The Landing from an operations standpoint. The place looks beautiful but the prices and experience were not what I wanted, so I stopped going. Hopefully the new owners have a feel for what is wanted. There seems to be plenty of feedback on here and Facebook to guide the new owners towards success.

Found this in the comments off the FB post. Sounds like the new owner will appreciate all of his customers, not just  the yuppies.

It sounds like they will be absentee owners with hired management.     I find that worrisome, but have my fingers crossed.

It seems like places do better when the owners badly need them to be successful and are there pouring beer or scooping ice cream.

ps...

Note, reading the above article makes it sound much more promising.  I'm pulling for them.

Well the water is open next to The Landing! I saw a few folks there last Friday, likely working to get the place set up. I'll definitely be stopping in for beers.

We loved the landing prior to the “new owners” and there changes to menu , prices , servers , and bartenders/ ie over all atmosphere.  My wife and I would eat there some 3/4 times a week during our cabin trip.

Just hoping the new owners return the place back to the way it was ( fish fry, cheap burger night , great nachos , walleye sandwich,  pizza , 2$ tappers etc……

Throw in the best mlb game of the day or sports center and we will be back 3/4 times a week.

Really wishing them well for the coming season …

I think it took a true idiot /snob/pr!ck to ruin a place like the Landing.  I see that place as a total money maker and only wish I had the financial backing to have made a move to purchase it. Especially with Bayview out of the picture ,that place could be/should be the hottest place on the lake.  Absolutely no reason that place can't be packed from open to close on a daily basis.

The vibe I'm getting from the new ownership is they are going to bring it back to more of a sports bar/destination bar on the lake.  I think they have heard the community and will be responding in kind.  I look forward to  boating over and enjoying some brews and food on that patio again this summer.

@BRULEDRIFTER We're on the east end of the lake, and we're all hoping that the Landing opens and thrives.  It is a great boat ride to the west end to have lunch.  Just an aside,  I talked to Ryan Horan three weeks ago and was told by him that they plan to have Bayview open for Fishing Opener.  The "Permanently Closed" sign is down on Hwy 77.  He also told me that they are putting in a completely new docking system that will accommodate more Bayview boats, and have reserved docks for the new campground.  We'll wait and see.  No opinions here, just stating what I was told by RH.

Interesting...

I will be up on Vermilion this weekend opening up the wife's family cabin and back up again for Fishing Opener. I am looking forward to checking out what the new owners have done with The Landing.

I was in the Landing today to do some troubleshooting. Looks the same as it did. They’re working at getting ready.

Arch at the VC has bought the Bayview. Rv Park will be seperate and owned by another party.  Memorial Wknd opening is a highly aggressive goal with sometime in June more realistic. Should be great synergy between the two bars.  Best of luck to Arch!

Well I’m sitting at the landing waiting for my food to come. Menu looks great, pricing is decent, place is filling up, it is awesome to have this place normal again. Ice out was yesterday for the whole lake.

We've met before-3 or 4 times. I could leave this a mystery, but how about a clue or two. Your came out to my place a few years ago (special-home service call) and worked on an older skidoo I used to have. You put on a new windshield and took care of some flooding issues I was having. Clue #2 you did some wiring for a neighbor (Ron) who installed a new generator a year or so ago. If I walked your shop, you probably wouldn't recognize me.

My guess is that you're Mr. Caruthers, the caretaker of the creepy castle.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?
    • LakeofthewoodsMN
On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
