A year of festivities celebrating the 125th anniversary of Minnesota state parks and trails will culminate with a candlelight walk and a countdown to the end of 2016 at Fort Snelling State Park on New Year’s Eve, the Department of Natural Resources said.

The candlelight walk will take place from 4 to 8 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 31. Park trails will be lit by candles, and visitors can roast marshmallows or enjoy a hot beverage around a crackling fire.

“This past year gave us an opportunity to honor the legacy of those who came before us and their commitment to blazing our trails; providing access to our state waterways; and preserving the natural and cultural resources that have now been entrusted to our care,” said Erika Rivers, director of the DNR’s Parks and Trails Division. “We are grateful to everyone who participated in the special 125th-anniversary events that took place in 2016.”

Highlights included:

  • 30 fourth-graders joining Lt. Gov. Tina Smith, DNR Commissioner Tom Landwehr and Rivers for the kick-off event at Fort Snelling State Park in January.
  • 245 fourth-graders attending the special event at Itasca State Park on April 20, the actual 125th anniversary of the park’s establishment.
  • Two “trail-in-a-day” events: one celebrating the 318-mile Minnesota River State Water Trail and the other celebrating the 115-mile Paul Bunyan State Trail.
  • Picnics and “summer samplers” intended to introduce new people to the natural beauty and outdoor recreation opportunities at Minnesota state parks.
  • The creation of a commemorative 125th-anniversary quilt, unveiled during a weekend festival at Itasca State Park in July.
  • A contest to design the new Minnesota state parks and trails specialty license plate, which went on sale Dec. 1.

In addition, many stickers were awarded to parks visitors who traveled “125 miles by bike, boot or boat” in 2016.

Despite it being one of the wettest years on record, Minnesota state parks are on track to break attendance records in 2016. Year-to-date sales of one-day vehicle permits are up 6 percent over 2015, and sales of year-round permits are up 7 percent. The candlelight event at Fort Snelling State Park on New Year’s Eve is expected to add as many as 2,000 more to the annual visitor total.

To reach Fort Snelling State Park, take the Post Road exit from Highway 5, just south of the main terminal exit for the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport, and follow the signs.

Save time, get vehicle permit in advance
A vehicle permit is required to enter Minnesota state parks and recreation areas ($5 for a one-day permit or $25 for a year-round permit). Although permits are available at the park, people planning to attend the New Year’s Eve candlelight event can avoid waiting in line by getting their permit in advance. Visit the reservations page, log in (or create an account), click on “entry permit,” select a duration of “one-day” ($5) or “year-round” ($25), and continue as directed. Purchasers will receive an email with a permit that can be printed and displayed in a vehicle during visits.

For more information, call the park at 612-725-2724 or visit the Fort Snelling State Park webpage.

What a difference a day makes.  Fishing was very slow today.  Biggest I caught was only 13 inches.  Marked a lot of fish but couldn't get very many to bite.   The wind was very strong today and did cause a little bit of drifting, but travel is still good on the latke.  Just avoid the snow banks and drifts.  Saw one house get pulled off the lake, and didn't see any new houses come out before I left the lake at 4pm.  Lots of snowmobiles and trailers in Tower.  At least the city and lake will be busy with those.   Good luck fishing if you go out the last weekend of the winter season.

Ice condition didn't change much in the last week as shown in the McKinley Park photo from today.  The holes in my house froze all the way down in the last six days; 40 inches of ice now.  I drilled my two holes 24 inches and cleared the shavings out before reaching water.  Much cleaner way in a permanent house.   Fishing was pretty good today.  Caught two 24" walleyes, including the 5#-7oz fatty pictured.  Also caught a 19 incher.  Best bite was from 11 to noon.  Much better action with chubs than shiners today.  Never tried the pike suckers I had.   Good luck fishing the last weekend this winter.  Going to be very windy Friday, but drifting shouldn't b a problem since there is no loose snow on the lake.  Saturday and Sunday look to be very warm.  Still about 35 houses left out from McKinley Park.
