How does one break down a new lake, to find basin related panfish?

What kind of search lures work best?

It depends on the size and the depth of the basins and their relation to shallower feeding flats. I like to work the edges of the basin near a shallower feeding flat, drill and move until you mark fish. I like to use a small rattle spoon that gets down quickly to the preferred zone. I'll stick to an area about 2/3rds of the way down to the bottom, that seems to have been the best area to find the fish in the water column.

Some of the smaller basins you are better off just drilling all over them, you can find active fish over the basins at any time during the day, although those cloudier days put more fish on the ice.

Bring extra auger gas and sharp blades.  If fishing panfish they can literally be anywhere in the basin from the weed edge to the deepest hole.  I like flats, cuts and saddles as places to start.  But nothing replaces a willingness to search.

I like small spoons or plastics on a little heavier jig to search.  Once you find them you can downsize if you need to.  I'll also recommend a good flasher.  They are worth every penny for ice fishing.

As other have said. Drill, drill, drill. I personally like flats and working out from there. If the lake is just a shallow bowl drilling and chasing is the best option

I like to find something me different on the flat or basin. A skunked island a spot where it drops off faster a pinch point. Lastly away from everyone else it seems to help with getting those big gills!

What a difference a day makes.  Fishing was very slow today.  Biggest I caught was only 13 inches.  Marked a lot of fish but couldn't get very many to bite.   The wind was very strong today and did cause a little bit of drifting, but travel is still good on the latke.  Just avoid the snow banks and drifts.  Saw one house get pulled off the lake, and didn't see any new houses come out before I left the lake at 4pm.  Lots of snowmobiles and trailers in Tower.  At least the city and lake will be busy with those.   Good luck fishing if you go out the last weekend of the winter season.

Ice condition didn't change much in the last week as shown in the McKinley Park photo from today.  The holes in my house froze all the way down in the last six days; 40 inches of ice now.  I drilled my two holes 24 inches and cleared the shavings out before reaching water.  Much cleaner way in a permanent house.   Fishing was pretty good today.  Caught two 24" walleyes, including the 5#-7oz fatty pictured.  Also caught a 19 incher.  Best bite was from 11 to noon.  Much better action with chubs than shiners today.  Never tried the pike suckers I had.   Good luck fishing the last weekend this winter.  Going to be very windy Friday, but drifting shouldn't b a problem since there is no loose snow on the lake.  Saturday and Sunday look to be very warm.  Still about 35 houses left out from McKinley Park.

Too bad she’s after big game when she leaves home.  Your one eyed trouser trout might not lure her in. 😉
