I've tried useing jigging raps in past years for walleyes but I don't think I have actually caught a fish on them. Has anybody had any luck getting walleyes on them?

They are excellent for both open water, and through the ice. I have caught tons of walleyes on Jigging Raps, and Puppet Minnows over the years,. I like to tip them with a minnow head, hang it on the treble under the bait. Putting something on the nose or tail hook may impede the action a bit. I also like to put a very small barrel swivel in-line above the bait to eliminate the constant spin that can take place once you have jigged it for awhile.  There is also a new bait out, similar to a Jigging Rap with a swivel already built in.

And I second what Moose said, the smaller ones are excellent on crappies, etc.

Keep jigging !  Good luck.

Thanks for the info. All I usually use is buck shot rattles and those work pretty well for walleyed crappies and Perch. I'll give the jigging raps another try this winter.

I will almost always have one rigged up in some way or another. Either the smalles of them for panfish, the largest for lake trout, or one of the other sizes for walleyes/saugers. But I rarely tip them

they are an aggressive fish bait. So if the fish are on the bite they will hit it.

When the crappies are active, the size 2 and 3 Raps are useful to coax bites from bigger fish, it seems. I don't catch many walleyes on them, but I'm not much of a walleye ice-angler. Pike like to bite them off.

In open water, the 7/8oz, size 9 Rap in that chrome Perch color is very effective for big bass and walleye. I just figured that out this season. It doesn't seem to catch little ones. Anything that hits it is gonna be big. Either that or nothing. 24-36" rips, covering lots of water.

I've had very good luck on the number 3 parrot color. One of my go to walleye baits ice fishing.

If your not confident in the jigging raps, try the #4 rippin raps.

You really can't work them too aggressively at prime time or while you are in search mode. Slow it down and watch how they react to it once they come in. They work well on crappies too!!!

Seems walleyes will hit a jigin rap when nothing else will work. They are my all time favorite search lure, and not just for walleyes. I have gotten plenty of big crappies and pearch on them. Even a few accidental bullgills fell for jiggin raps

I've used them when walleyesnare really biting and can't get nothing. Then switch back to hook I had on when I was catching them then I catch them again. Maybe I'm using it wrong, I put minnow head on it and jig it slow, fast in the middle and can't seem to get any takers.

Rip it!!

There isn't anything subtle about fishing a jigging rap.  After ripping it a few times let it swim back to center, pause it for no more than a few seconds, then rip it again.

Every lure has it's time.  I'very killed them on jigging raps at times and other times wouldn't get a touch.  Don't be afraid to pound the bottom with them and rip them aggressively.  I rarely tip them with bait.

What colors are you guys using? UV pink and chrome perch are the ones that work for me.

For me it depends on water clarity, depth and specie type; so I have a variety.  Some are natural colors and others are very busy and bright.

I like them for aggressive fish but feel they will spook neutral feeding Walleyes. For those I would rather use a vertical bait and just twitch a minnow head once they come in. Rip it or give it 1 foot lifts to attract and then wait and twitch.

What a difference a day makes.  Fishing was very slow today.  Biggest I caught was only 13 inches.  Marked a lot of fish but couldn't get very many to bite.   The wind was very strong today and did cause a little bit of drifting, but travel is still good on the latke.  Just avoid the snow banks and drifts.  Saw one house get pulled off the lake, and didn't see any new houses come out before I left the lake at 4pm.  Lots of snowmobiles and trailers in Tower.  At least the city and lake will be busy with those.   Good luck fishing if you go out the last weekend of the winter season.

Ice condition didn't change much in the last week as shown in the McKinley Park photo from today.  The holes in my house froze all the way down in the last six days; 40 inches of ice now.  I drilled my two holes 24 inches and cleared the shavings out before reaching water.  Much cleaner way in a permanent house.   Fishing was pretty good today.  Caught two 24" walleyes, including the 5#-7oz fatty pictured.  Also caught a 19 incher.  Best bite was from 11 to noon.  Much better action with chubs than shiners today.  Never tried the pike suckers I had.   Good luck fishing the last weekend this winter.  Going to be very windy Friday, but drifting shouldn't b a problem since there is no loose snow on the lake.  Saturday and Sunday look to be very warm.  Still about 35 houses left out from McKinley Park.
