Looking to pick up a few inlines and was wondering is there is a "best " reel out there. Looking at weight and is a multiplier style for pan fishing. Right now I still use plastic ones just because I love just how light they are but the quality is suspect.

I'm a fan of the No. 8 inline.  Pretty affordable at $35 and has stood up well over the last few years.

I have been such a big fan on the eagle claw inline reel i used last year that I bought a few more of them for this year. And they are easy for my kids to use also.

I like the clam 1:1 inline reels, frabill puts their names on the same type. Most of the panfish fishing I do is 16' or shallower. If you're out deeper than I'd start worrying about the multipliers.

If money was no object, I'd have Black Betty reels on all my rods. Nice drag and construction. But alas, money is an object therefore I have a bunch of eagle claws.

My gf loves the fly reel, though. Less tangles, she says. It also has the best drag by far.

Thanks for the input guys. I am one of those shallow fishing guys and that's why I don't need a ton of line but a good drag is key. Most people laugh at what I fish with but it dose put a lot of fish on the ice. Guess its time to get into the 21st century :D

What size is that Okuma fly reel, 2/3 or 4/5?

Posted (edited)

I have the Black Betty 6061 (2nd year model) a Frabill 371 and the Okuma SLV fly reel in 2/3 weight. For deeper water the Black Betty is tops. In shallow I prefer the Okuma. It's just slow getting line out peeling it off by hand. The drag on the Frabill seems inferior to either of the others. VERY fine line between too loose and locked down tight. Ive also noticed it has a tendency to want to "stick". Overall the Frabill feels "cheap". But given the price difference it's likely a case of getting what you pay for. For the price the Frabill is a decent reel.

May pick up an eagle claw to see what they are like.

I tried an inline with no drag and did not like it at all. SO then I got the #8's.  Have not tried any other inlines but if they have a drag I would most likely like them.

The inlines are much easier on light line than spinning reels, I can get one spooling to last all winter long. The Clam and Frabill units have a nice drag that I've caught some dandy pike and bass on. Pick one up Jim, they are priced very reasonably. The 13 fishing black betty was the worst 1:1 I've fished with. Can't imagine their more pricier reels are any better lol.
