Personally, I've caught 4 x more using a tube jig or airplane jig. The way the come up and hammer it, it doesn't seem to need any meat on it ...

Interesting... It would seem to me that the ciscoes in question were indeed being used to "enhance recreation".

Given the limited resources of that agency, I'm surprised to hear they are engaging in this type of activity... perhaps there is more to the story.

But, to answer your question, I agree with yoppdk. So many synthetic options these days, I rarely mess with meat anymore.

I agree 100%. A 4-5"  tube is my go to bait.

On the other hand, a cisco or smelt hanging under a tip up was always a nice diversion from the jigging. But, as stated, the jigging (with artificials) always attracted more fish for me.

To me, meat is just as important as my favorite artificial.  Day by day either one can outfish the other so I usually run both whenever I'm out.

I'm hoping this doesn't bring about yet another reason for shops to quit dealing with frozen bait.

Ciscoes was my go to bait, I hope this doesn't wreck the supply this year.

Anyone have better techniques than a jig tipped with a Ciscoe?

Geez, sounds like GO maybe in a little hot water for a bit?

U.S. Sen. Amy Klobuchar, D-Minn., and U.S. Rep. Rick Nolan, D-Crosby, had asked the Forest Service to allow cisco netting on Basswood Lake this fall, and the Forest Service agreed to do so.

Reads to me as they were legal.;)

Was mentioned maybe they were taken on the Canada side? Lot of unanswered questions-something is missing on the details we received?

8-10 agents lol wow

I'm sure there's a fair amount of exaggeration in the story. It's bad enough to have to drive all the way up to ely to get good frozen bait, the shops down here won't sell you anything frozen.

I have changed over to using uncooked shrimp or buying and killing/freezing my own suckers. But the ciscos outfish both 2-3/1

Maki might not be my favorite or even my go to bait shop up there, but I don't want to see any of those shops struggle. Winter is a tight time up there so to loose any business is trouble.

my favorite is a glow tube power bait, this has caught more lakers for me than airplane jigs and ciscos combined. when using airplane jigs, we would put a piece of cisco on it, just had to remove all the extra treble hooks on the wings that always would tangle with the line.

You eventually catch most of your fish on what you use the most.

Yep, tubes are good.  I started with them too.  For me though, I won't hang my hat on any one bait.  Not even for lakers.

Anything that flashes, dances off to the side and drops quick will work. You can always cut a strip of sucker with the skin still attached for a little extra enticement.

Just work it.

When I fished Trout Lake a lot live Light Northers Suckers under a tip-up would out catch Ciscos every day of the week!

White jig heads with a white tube, if that's not working use a buzz bomb with a sucker head or tail on the treble

What a difference a day makes.  Fishing was very slow today.  Biggest I caught was only 13 inches.  Marked a lot of fish but couldn't get very many to bite.   The wind was very strong today and did cause a little bit of drifting, but travel is still good on the latke.  Just avoid the snow banks and drifts.  Saw one house get pulled off the lake, and didn't see any new houses come out before I left the lake at 4pm.  Lots of snowmobiles and trailers in Tower.  At least the city and lake will be busy with those.   Good luck fishing if you go out the last weekend of the winter season.

Ice condition didn't change much in the last week as shown in the McKinley Park photo from today.  The holes in my house froze all the way down in the last six days; 40 inches of ice now.  I drilled my two holes 24 inches and cleared the shavings out before reaching water.  Much cleaner way in a permanent house.   Fishing was pretty good today.  Caught two 24" walleyes, including the 5#-7oz fatty pictured.  Also caught a 19 incher.  Best bite was from 11 to noon.  Much better action with chubs than shiners today.  Never tried the pike suckers I had.   Good luck fishing the last weekend this winter.  Going to be very windy Friday, but drifting shouldn't b a problem since there is no loose snow on the lake.  Saturday and Sunday look to be very warm.  Still about 35 houses left out from McKinley Park.

Too bad she’s after big game when she leaves home.  Your one eyed trouser trout might not lure her in. 😉
