Someone is already fishing on 5 inches in Ely. Look up rough fish on google, then go to the first result, then go to "recent forum topics". Neat stuff.

I can not think of any lake in the Ely area that would have 5" of ice.

Even the beaver ponds in the Tower area barely have ice on them!

EDIT: Heard from my grandson that there ARE guys fishing in the Ely area ! He did not know where though.

I have seen a couple reports of folks out on some skinny ice already, but nothing I would feel real comfortable being on  yet.

By this weekend some of the braver souls will be be out with their spud bars!

It only gets better. Before winter, -11 at night 0 for high and < 1" snow. 4 wheeler out by Christmas.

Wind subsided and last night we got Ice. Coon Lake Anoka County locked up. 3 small spots in 24 FOW with no snow.

WestHunter in Zimmerman was open water at 5:00am Wednesday morning. Locked up solid at 3:30pm when I got home. First high school kid in the water 5:05pm

happens every year. :/

always a gamble on the thin stuff. and 2 1/2 inches can vary depending on the quality.  so I dont think its smart to take a 4 wheeler on it. :)
