Wondering if anyone on here uses the handheld GPS units?  I have been looking at getting one for finding where I am on the ice and marking spots. Curious as to what units others are using?

If you have a smart phone, the Navionics app is great.

I have Navionics on my phone but prefer my Garmin handheld.  Can't remember the model though.

I use Navionics Boating App both Ice and water on a 10" Samsung Tablet with GPS chip. I download updated maps every couple of weeks during fishing season because lots of boaters link the app to one of the WiFi fish finders and turn on SonarChart Live which records depth about every second while fishing. The data is sent to Navionics via WiFi when available on smart phone/tablet. I connect the tablet via a car charger to my boat, Wheel House or Lead Acid (Vex) battery when in my hub. Never run out of power. Also have the app on my smart phone as you can load as many devices with one purchase of the app as long as you use your Play Store or Itune account. On ice I also use the tablet with my Vex  FishPhone camera and Vex SonarPhone on water. Setup is sweet - gave away my 2 Garmin's due to improved accuracy of the Boating App.

I run a splitter and car charger off the Vex battery that lights my flipover. Also have a 10ah power bank that's about the size of a deck of cards to use around town and when using the gps function in the field.

Yes the Navonics phone app is as accurate as more expensive ones and you don't need to spend the extra $$ on another unit!  The app costs under $10!!

Scored a lowrance Elite 5Hdi today for $169.99 (awesome sale). Plan to use this on ice and in boat for GPS purposes. Paired with the navionics app, excited to compare accuracy side x side.

If interested in the sale, it's at a store that rhymes with meander fountain..  :D:P:cool:

This is an upgrade for me, I have used the app with good success. Hoping this new unit will be a bit more accurate.

Great tip Big A. :D Was in exact scenario and picked one up myself.  Right after ordered the universal Lowr. pack from cabelas.  Had a 597 on old boat that sold, loved the unit for ice, excited to see how Lowrance is this time around.  Will sit next to the Garmin in boat for GPS, not a big fan of the Lakevu

What does the Lake map chip run for it?

I've got an older Lowrance unit that I rigged on a Genz blue box with a Minnesota Lake Map chip in it. Works great, those older GPS units still have some use left.

Some of you said that you use the Navionics app on your smart phone? Does anyone know how to save way points on there phone or to the cloud? I have had 2 different phones since i got the app and every time i get a new phone the way points I saved do not come on my new phone! Its a bummer..... Any help would be much appreciated.

If you can get Boating App on your old phones working again with your recorded Markers, tracks and routes  in settings check the Sync my data. Then on your new phone Boating app, go to Charts & Updates and select Restore Purchases.

If you cannot go back to your old phone and turn on "Sync My Data" your recorded data will be lost.

Worst case, screenshot the gps coordinate of your favorite spots on the old phone and mark them on the new one... worth the time it would take to not lose all the info anyways
