Heading up to Duluth this weekend and should have some free time in the morning (1-3) hours. Just was wondering if anyone had herd anything or been out. Last time I was up (middle of October) there was a guy fishing by the Irvin just south of that where the blue fence is. And as we walking he had something on and lost it and a few minutes later same thing. He was using a bobber setup with a dead something (Cisco maybe?) Does anyone know anything about this? Is it worth it to throw the gear for one last open water outing? I would like to stay in canal park (due to time). Thanks for the help!

Yes, I live in Duluth and it is most likely it was a hybred rainbow called Kamaloop.

I would suggest stoping by Marine General and asking them about shore fishing, my thought would be the French river with a "looper bud" and a wax worm suspended by a weighted slip bobber.

all available from Russ at Marine General on 15th Ave and London rd

Good Luck

Fishonice

They were fishing for northern pike

sorry did not see location

try French only 5 miles from canal park

Thanks!  Planning on stopping by MG sometime.  Would a normal bobber with split shots work? Or does it have to be "weighted". I might throw in my baitcaster and a box of baits maybe try casting for northerern it's been a few years since I've caught one on a rod and reel (mostly spear for them). Hopefully be able to catch something. If not still to be out there enjoying good old Lake Superior! Is there a special type of looper bud that works better than others? Color, size?

The guy by the Irvin was most likely not targeting loopers.  Just thought I should clarify that for you.  He was mostly likely fishing eelpout that are moving in from the lake to spawn or pike/walleye.  My guess is he was using a smelt but possibly a cisco.

There is some okay Looper fishing if you head north of town up the shore.  It is very hit or miss. Be prepared to fish in close proximity to people.  Marine General can get you dialed in on what you need and hook you up with some Looper bugs.

There are also some inland waters you could fish but with your limited time they are a bit far.

OK lets clarify as you said you wanted to fish the Canal Park area.   The guy fishing by the Ervin was more then likely fishing for Pike.  Bobber and smelt, sucker minnow. You can use LS as bait there.  You'll need a long handled net.

If you want Loopers you'll drive up to French River.

Inflated Crawler on the bottom with slip sinker sinker.

Weighted bobber,  looper bug & waxie, scud, fresh water shrimp flies.

Sometimes you want to burn it out there, sometimes you want it close.

Thanks for clarifying that ST!

All is true stated above

when I first replyed I did not realize you were talking about fishing by Ariel lift bridge.

my boy had a jet ski business in that exact area and watches people catch big  otherens in the summertime.

I still think a ask of Marine General staff about fishing Lester or French river with a weighted bobber and white looper bug is my best advice.

good luck

Hey I remember when they used to rent the jet skis there. I used to shore fish that area. I liked it better before the hotel moved in and filled in some of the shoreline.

I've been out for loopers a few times so far this fall. Typical for this time of year it's been pretty slow. Occasionally a looper or steelhead is being caught. You have to have the right mindset. Think of it more like hunting.
