Sharpening a Leech Lake filet knife

Question

Posted

I have a Leech Lake filet knife that I've used exclusively for the last 10 years or so.
I love the knife and have fileted thousands of fish with it over the years. It wasn't until last winter that I ever had to sharpen it at all....it performed flawlessly for many years.
Now, after my attempts to keep it sharp with crock sticks it's still useable, but not what it should be, especially the all important back edge used to make the initial cut through the scales.

I heard that you can take them to the Sportsmans show and have them sharpened, but was wondering if anyone knows how or where I can get it PROPERLY sharpened so I can once again enjoy it to its' fullest ASAP.

I'd appreciate any suggestions and/or personal experiences.
Thanks !

You can take it to a pro, but I simply suspect that your bevel is inconsistent along the cutting edge.

Get yourself a Lansky sharpening system. They can be had for 20-30 bucks at Gnader Mtn or Fleet Farm.

It clamps the knife in a fixture, and then you hone the blade with a stone that is attached to a rod. The rod is inserted into a hole in the fixture, and this keeps your stone stroking on the same angle every time.

If your edge is messed up, it will take some time to get it back with the Lansky. Once you have it back, it is very easy to maintain.

i would try and ship it back and have them put a factory edge on it....they'll probably do it for free.

Right off there website Twitter. Been meaning to thank you for the .243 also, much appreciated, I know my dad was happy with the price.
1. Once a year - for as long as you own your Leech Lake Knife - you can ship it to Don and he will sharpen and polish your knife FREE. Enclose $5.00 for the return shipping.

2. If for any reason, you are dissatisfied with your knife for as long as you own it (provided you have used it the way it was intended to be used), bring it or send it back to Leech Lake Knife Company or G50 Enterprises and Don or I will exchange it for a new one or give you your money back

Your choice - You have my signature on that!

I paid $75 for one at the NW Sports Show at the Convention Center. This show is usually in early March.

About 80 bucks (80 well spent) and you can get them at allot of sporting good stores. Reeds has them of course and I know that some of the Scheels stores carry them. You can also find them online on their web page.

Fish were a little finicky for us.  I don’t know if was the weather (almost hurricane wind it felt like!) or the fact the crowd reached our preferred area.  Houses were on our best spots by Noon on Friday.  Our friend was there earlier any by the time we got there around 8pm, even the cyber scouted spots were taken.     Friday night’s spot was OK for slot walleyes but mostly 9 inch perch.  The move away from the crowd got us into better perch, up to 12 inches, and a few keeper walleyes and one big pout.   Really let the grandkids try to run their own rattle reels and they lost a lot of the jumbos on the Sat evening bite, which was chaos for almost 90 minutes.  They got a better hang of it by this morning but we didn’t have as many jumbos come through.

We didn’t get off the lake until 1pm.  The roads were in good shape by then.  A little sloppy on the edges but almost completely dry on the southbound side.   I’d say your zones are about right.  North of 210, then 200, then 2.  All unique and a little more sketch the further north you go.

My 4 inch Rapala fillet knife works well for taking out the Y bones. On the top side of the bones, with the right touch, it slides across them real nice, kinda like shaving.      Got a 26.5 on my perch line yesterday.  It was great! lol!
