Two damaged horse trail bridges at Fort Ridgely State Park in Fairfax will be repaired and ready for use in September and late November. The southern horse bridge over Fort Ridgely Creek is closed to pedestrians and equestrians due to a hole in the bridge decking. Repairs are underway now, and the bridge is expected to open by early September.

The northern horse trail bridge crosses Fort Ridgely Creek and connects the horse campground to the Fair Ridge and state park horse trails. Two years ago summer flooding severely damaged the bridge, which was replaced with a temporary low water crossing. In the spring of 2015, federal funding became available for bridge replacement. The new bridge is expected to open in November.

Fort Ridgely State Park is located off State Highway 4, six miles south of Fairfax. The fort, once a significant outpost during the period of western expansion, was a battle site during the U.S.-Dakota War of 1862. Remnants of fort buildings remain at the park, which today features a state historic museum, camping and year-round multi-use trails.
