Taking my son on a three day adventure into pine lake.  This is our first time portaging into Trout and Pine lake.  Does anyone have any experience fishing Pine Lake in July?  Any tips as far as must have tackle and bait?

Bring plenty of size 7 floating Rapalas!

Spinners with crawlers, pork crawlers, or plastic should work well also for walleyes.

Agree with Cliff, I love Pine as the walleye and smallie fishing are equally as good, with some good nothern action, where Pine creek is I have had my best luck for walleyes but have also caught walleyes casting stick baits (like cliff said rapala 7 or husky jerks), love that lake enjoy it.

If you don't plan to take a tow to the portage, try to get an early start from Moccasin Point...Or watch the weather to make sure the winds are OK for paddling.  A big west/northwest wind can make that initial paddle a bit hairy, especially if your son is on the younger side.

I love Pine Lake...I tend to focus on smallies when in the BWCA, and it's a good lake for them.  Don't forget your topwaters for the early morning and sunset bite.

The 40-ish rod portage into Trout is easy.  The portage into Pine is a bit short of a mile, but it's pretty easy despite the length.  No major ups and downs or significant low spots (at least the few times I've been across it).  Take your time and double/triple portage, and you'll have a great time.

Thanks for the info.  RoosterMan is going to give us a tow over to the Trout portagefrom my cabin.  We have two youngsters in our group, so the less big water paddling the better.

For future reference does anyone know if there is someone one the lake who provides tow service from moccasins point to the portage? I read a few blogs that mentioned a shuttle service.

VG,

Not sure if Lonnie, guy that runs the portage, will tow you over from Moc. Point area or not.

Beautiful day on Vermilion Sunday for the last day of walleye season.  Lots of people were fishing in portables, or out in the open.  Was entertaining watching many of the wheel and skid houses being pulled off of the lake.  Checked half a dozen spots where wheel houses were removed and didn't find any trash at all.  Sounds like people are getting the message.  I may go out on the lake when the snow is melted to do a further check and cleanup if needed.   Fishing was average for this time of the year.  Had a decent bite from 2pm to 4pm when I caught my biggest eye (pictured 22 inch).  Decent finish to a good season.  Now on to lake trout fishing.   Hope everyone had an enjoyable and successful ice fishing season.  Going to be a long time before this year's open water season.

What a difference a day makes.  Fishing was very slow today.  Biggest I caught was only 13 inches.  Marked a lot of fish but couldn't get very many to bite.   The wind was very strong today and did cause a little bit of drifting, but travel is still good on the latke.  Just avoid the snow banks and drifts.  Saw one house get pulled off the lake, and didn't see any new houses come out before I left the lake at 4pm.  Lots of snowmobiles and trailers in Tower.  At least the city and lake will be busy with those.   Good luck fishing if you go out the last weekend of the winter season.
