Want to replace my H2O

Question

Posted

Looking for a little help. I want to replace my H2O which has a lake master chip with a new hand held gps. Is there anything that compares or is better? I use it for ice fishing and atving but my 12v cord has final took a dump and I cannot find a replacement. Thanks for the help.

Does it work if you do not have cell phone reception? Plus not sure I want to expose my phone to the mud and snow of wheeling and ice fishing.

Cell phone only needs GPS to run boating app. WiFi to download the app. I found and use a cheap 7" tablet $30 that has a built in GPS chip for my boating app. Tablet has no phone capability. Screen shots on my recent Navionics boating app post are from my tablet.

If you also want a land map I would suggest Waze for your phone or tablet.

The 7" tablet is by DigiLand Mod DL701Q. It does have excellent GPS capability.

The Screen like most other phones, tablets and iPads are polished so when the sun is directly on your back there is a bit of mirror type reflection but you can You can still see the contours. I built a sun shade, much like a visor on a ball cap, that covers both my iPad running Sonar and Tablet with Boating app so sun is no longer an issue.

Amazon still selling the unit for $34. I bought mine a WalMart over a ago for $30.

Battery life for both iPad and tablet is about 3 hours so I have 12VDC plugs on my boat, 4 wheeler and wheel house. Battery is not an issue for me. I carry a jumper battery when in my Eskimo hub.

Thanks Paceman - Here is a Pic of the tablet and iPad setup. Digiland Tablet on left has boating, iPad on right has Vex SonarPhone. Pic before I added the sun visor.

This is a short video screen recording on the Digiland with split screen boating on top and SonarPhone on bottom. I recorded it a very low resolution which, produces a fuzzy pic, because videos create massive files when recorded in high resolution. Just an FYI, the SonarChart update later showed up on my boating map update about two weeks after I did the chart.
