Underground Fence for Dog

I live on a farm and have a dog who normally doesn't run, but if someone happens to be walking by on the road he will run out to them and continue to follow them. Is there anything I can do as far as fence goes instead of burying a wire around 5 plus acres? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

They make wireless systems but I believe only havahartwireless makes one that goes over 5 acres but They don't have too good of reviews. Perimeter technologies seems to make a decent one for 2.5 acres. D.E systems border patrol has a  GPS one for up to 400 acres with a little better reviews than havanhart wireless. 

 

Or You could do a wired fence just along the road and up the sides a little bit in a U shape since you are only worried about the dog going after people on the road. I would think that would work unless you think your dog would run up the property line and around and back down to the road.

That might be an option but doesn't the fence need to connect on both ends for it to work?

It would be something like that but you would extend the boundary wire up in a U while this picture the guy has a fence

It seems you can put grounding rods at the end and not a have a closed loop system but I think you have to have a high powered transmitter and they are not as reliable.

 

I guess it depends how big the U is going to be it might not be worth it since like the first picture it would be a double loop so you would be digging two trenches side by side almost be worth it to just trench the whole yard one loop

I would do some research on what brand you are thinking and give them a call and see what they think.

I tried two different brands of wireless and found them very inconsistent. Sometimes the warning would go off in one location and the next time the dogs could go an additional 20' or more. Then when they got shocked they had to run back 20' before it stopped. It made it next to impossible to train the dogs.

We finally bought a buried wire system which works great. The dogs know exactly how far they can go. It helps to bury the wire next to something the dogs can key off. I have two sides buried just before the tree line and another side at the brink of a hill. If you just bury it in the middle of a field, it will be more difficult for the dogs to know their boundary.

We fenced about three acres and it really wasn't that much work.

I know people use boundary flags too for places that are just open
