The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources wants to remind visitors that only approved firewood is allowed on lands managed by the DNR, such as state parks, state forests and wildlife management areas. Firewood restrictions will help prevent the introduction or spread of damaging forest pests, including emerald ash borer, gypsy moth and oak wilt.

Firewood that can be used on state-managed lands must be offered for sale by the DNR at that location or:

  • Be acquired from a DNR-approved firewood vendor that sells firewood harvested within 50 miles from where burning occurs.
  • Be acquired from a DNR-approved firewood vendor certified by the Minnesota Department of Agriculture (MDA) or the U.S. Department of Agriculture Animal & Plant Health Inspection Service (USDA-APHIS). There will be a certification shield on the bundle label.
  • Be kiln-dried, clean (unpainted and unstained) dimensional lumber free of any metal or foreign substance. Pallet boards are not considered approved firewood because they may contain bark that can harbor forest pests.

There is one exception: Anyone camping on state forest land outside of a designated campground may gather dead wood on the ground for campfire use on site.

“Remember to keep your bundle label, purchase receipt or vendor ticket when purchasing firewood from a DNR-approved firewood vendor,” said Susan Burks, the DNR’s Forestry Division’s invasive species program coordinator. “You many need to show it to DNR staff or camp hosts where you are camping.”

The DNR encourages visitors to burn all firewood purchased from a park before leaving or to return unopened bundles for a refund. Leave any leftover firewood purchased outside the park with the camp host or at the campsite for the next camper. It’s important that visitors not take firewood home because it could move forest pests to a new location.

For more information, including a list of approved firewood vendors, visit the firewood page or contact the DNR Information Center at [email protected], 651-296-6157 or 888-646-6367 between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Like those pallets from China and other places won't release pests if not in the campground.... The govenment exerted little effort to stop invasive species when they were coming in on commercial shipments or bilge water.  It took decades for the coast guard to make ships flush their ballast and bilge at sea.  As a result we have zeebs, and quaga mussels and gobies of several kinds.

Luckily they finally closed the lock at st anthony falls before the asian carp got to it.  Now if they would fix the Chicago Ship canal with something better than bubbles and noisemakers before they get into lake Michigan...  But it might cost someone money so they will study until too late.

And note that those carp were imported with government approval to eat algae in catfish ponds...  Oopsie, there was a flood.

Yes, these wood bans are an absolute joke and nothing but a Ponzi scheme to raise money. 5 or 6 dollars for a few pieces of wood. Lets get real.......!!! Ever check to see how far the approved vendors ship the wood? But I am sure every piece was checked for pests.....Ha Ha!!! Its nice to visit the parks and state lands but like anything else be prepared to get your checkbook out!

Sounds like a nice last day.  I like how you photoshop a different shirt on that same picture the last few years!  🤣

Beautiful day on Vermilion Sunday for the last day of walleye season.  Lots of people were fishing in portables, or out in the open.  Was entertaining watching many of the wheel and skid houses being pulled off of the lake.  Checked half a dozen spots where wheel houses were removed and didn't find any trash at all.  Sounds like people are getting the message.  I may go out on the lake when the snow is melted to do a further check and cleanup if needed.   Fishing was average for this time of the year.  Had a decent bite from 2pm to 4pm when I caught my biggest eye (pictured 22 inch).  Decent finish to a good season.  Now on to lake trout fishing.   Hope everyone had an enjoyable and successful ice fishing season.  Going to be a long time before this year's open water season.

What a difference a day makes.  Fishing was very slow today.  Biggest I caught was only 13 inches.  Marked a lot of fish but couldn't get very many to bite.   The wind was very strong today and did cause a little bit of drifting, but travel is still good on the latke.  Just avoid the snow banks and drifts.  Saw one house get pulled off the lake, and didn't see any new houses come out before I left the lake at 4pm.  Lots of snowmobiles and trailers in Tower.  At least the city and lake will be busy with those.   Good luck fishing if you go out the last weekend of the winter season.
