It's getting to be that time of year.  Please post reports of the mayfly hatch along with the general area the lake.  Thanks!

Will do!

Saw a couple of small strays out in Big Bay today!

I saw a couple of small slicks of May Fly in Big Bay this morning.

Windy out there so was hard to determine how big of a hatch there really was, but probably not very big yet.

Been spending some time north of Pine island this week and there are bugs on the sonar all over the place.  They will most likely be coming to the surface in the next few days. We already had a hatch in Pike bay and there were a lot of dead bugs floating on the east end of Pine on Friday, however it was windy and like Cliff said it's hard to determine just where they came from.  Just get out the spinners and pull them through the bugs, it can be a very good bite. ;)

Mayflies aren't quite full blown in Niles yet. Seemed like the Hatch picked up a bit over the course of the wknd though.

Saw lots of Mayfly nymph clouds in the water column in Big Bay today.

Lots of Mayfly larvae clouds in the water column today!

All of the walleyes that we caught today were full of them!

Lindy and 1/2 crawler were the ticket.

19' to 26' depths.

Thank you for the information good to see they are still biting.  I know bass is not your biggest bag but what effect if any do you think the mayflies have on the smallie bite in the big bay area, hoping for some big number days next week, our mens trip got moved from the first weekend in June until next, these guys have never fished this time of the year up there.

Fishing west end Norwegian Bay. Mayfly hatch was in full swing last night. Panfish fishing is poor. Killed the walleyes last night. 7 in an hour after rain quit. 26.5, 25.5, 24.5, 22, 21, 19 and a 17.5. All on lindy with green floating jig and leech. 11-15 ft water. They were smoking that jig.

I have fished for bass during major Mayfly hatches and it does not seem to have any effect on the bite.

Lots of Mayflies on the water in Big Bay this morning!

That did not affect the walleye bite much though!

My client caught this 27 incher and I lost an even bigger fish, (did not see that one though), so it may have been a pike or muskie.

I'll be up Friday for ten days. Hopefully the flies are done. Can't wait to get up!

Was tough fishing for me last weekend.  Caught only an 11" perch Friday.  Didn't go out on Saturday due to the lousy weather and home remodeling to do.  Sunday morning I caught my only two walleyes of the weekend; 21" and 20" pictured below.  Caught them 30 minutes apart.  Had no other bites that morning.  Saw many mayflies on the surface Friday in Big Bay during calm weather, and marked many clouds of them Sunday morning.  Water temps were 72°F Friday when it was calm, and 68°F Sunday with the wind.  Hopefully I have better luck next weekend.IMG_0555.jpgIMG_0558.jpg

A few of the walleyes that we caught today were full of young-of-the-year perch too!

Sounds like a nice last day.  I like how you photoshop a different shirt on that same picture the last few years!  🤣

Beautiful day on Vermilion Sunday for the last day of walleye season.  Lots of people were fishing in portables, or out in the open.  Was entertaining watching many of the wheel and skid houses being pulled off of the lake.  Checked half a dozen spots where wheel houses were removed and didn't find any trash at all.  Sounds like people are getting the message.  I may go out on the lake when the snow is melted to do a further check and cleanup if needed.   Fishing was average for this time of the year.  Had a decent bite from 2pm to 4pm when I caught my biggest eye (pictured 22 inch).  Decent finish to a good season.  Now on to lake trout fishing.   Hope everyone had an enjoyable and successful ice fishing season.  Going to be a long time before this year's open water season.

What a difference a day makes.  Fishing was very slow today.  Biggest I caught was only 13 inches.  Marked a lot of fish but couldn't get very many to bite.   The wind was very strong today and did cause a little bit of drifting, but travel is still good on the latke.  Just avoid the snow banks and drifts.  Saw one house get pulled off the lake, and didn't see any new houses come out before I left the lake at 4pm.  Lots of snowmobiles and trailers in Tower.  At least the city and lake will be busy with those.   Good luck fishing if you go out the last weekend of the winter season.
