Mercury 150 Four Stroke Trim issue

Minnesota Fats

Question

Hi

I have a 2012 mercury 150 four stroke.  Non Verado.  My issue is that when I hit the trim switch when i'm at speed, the motor bogs significantly.  When I do it at idle, the motor kills.

I have checked the connections at the battery, and the green and blue wires under the cowl.  All were tight and not corroded.

When the motor is shut off, the down trim sounds normal, but the up trim sounds slow.

The OCV of the battery is 12.4V

The battery voltage when the motor is idling is 13.8V.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

I would swap a battery to see if there is any difference.  Have you checked the hydraulic fluids? Based on your description, it sounds like something is binding or there is air in the lines.

Sorry I forgot to mention I replaced the battery with a new one, and I checked the hydraulic fluid and it was full.

Maybe a hydraulic pump or motor issue that you could check with am amp meter if you had the specs on the motor.

I'd check to make sure the pivot points are lubricated, usually a couple of grease zerks.

Thanks Hoey.  I don't see any zerks on the trim pivots.  Seems strange.

Good idea on the amperage check, I'll try that next.

I checked the amps - about 16-18 when I'm pushing the down button and about 26-32 when I'm pushing the up button.  I checked on both the blue and green wires and got similar results.

I assume the up would be a higher draw than the down, but no idea if it should be this big of a difference.

Do you have more than one control switch.  I had this issue with mine and my short was in the throttle handle.  When other remote switches were used it worked fine.

I do, there's one on the throttle binnacle and one on the side of the lower motor cowl.  I disconnected the one on the side of the motor and it didn't change anything.  Is there an easy way to disconnect the one on the throttle?  Thanks for the advice!

Just have someone adjust trim at the motor while running it across the lake to see if the problem changes. I would not disconnect anything until you at least try that to narrow down the problem.

I have '13 model and it does the same thing although it has never died on me while idling and using the trim.  Dealer told me its normal.   They said with such a small pump it has to work hard and draws a lot of power.  Would be interesting to hear from others who own one.

Jim - I tried that (using the cowl mounted button while on the lake last weekend) and the same thing happened as when I used the throttle mounted button.

Just for giggles I just went out and rechecked DC amps using both switches and got the same draw.  It is on the trailer and therefore this was checked with the motor off.

Slammer - I know what you are talking about, but this isn't the normal lose a few RPMs - this is like a 1000+ RPM bog.  It didn't do it for the first 3 season I owned it, this is something new.

If the battery is new and the connections at the terminal and at the switches are not corroded, then the only thing I can point to is the pump or hydraulic fluid.

Raise the motor all the way up and check the fluids.

If the pump is working hard enough to drop your RPMs at speed or kills it at idle then it's working too hard.  Might just be a bad pump.

I'll do some research to see if this is an epidemic on the 2012 models.

Forgot to ask.....aren't you still under warranty?  When talking to your dealer, you could blame the problem on the engine since it dies when you engage the tilt/trim.  They could probably diagnose it in 10 minutes.

Thanks True North

I had already checked the fluid at the full up position - it was full.

Called the dealer, they are going to take it in.  He seemed to think they could figure it out quickly, so that's the next course of action...

Nephew just bought a new boat with a '15 150  and said his bogs down also when using trim.  It seems like Merc needs to do some reengineering on the lift system.  I checked my fluid tonite and its full.  Look forward to hear what the dealer finds out on yours MN fats.

Yes I got it back - turns out it was the ground that comes off the trim motor harness on the starboard side of the engine that is attached to the motor mounting bracket with a small stainless hex head bolt... the wire was damaged somehow but wasn't fully broken.  So they fixed the wire and cleaned the contact and now it works great.

If you have the issue i'd check that ground and make sure its cleaned and tight...

Flushed 3 pheasants today with Hazel but they were flushing 50 yards a head of her. Then we went by some little berries that looked black and hazels tail started going a brown bird gets up I thought hen then the bird banked and it was a grouse. It was good to get her out in the woods. I seen a few pheasants in picked corn fields.

Walked today and yesterday, flushed 9, shot at two and got two. Hopefully next year I'll have a dog to hunt with. Still warm up here, skim of ice on ponds. Weather has been nice. Hopefully walk a bit more the next few weeks. Been pretty cautious walking for birds to not interfere with deer hunters. There sure are not the deer hunters there used to be

On the South Shore...  The focus for many this week is the ongoing deer hunting season which is a big tradition in these parts, even for avid walleye anglers.  There were some that either already harvested their deer or are more into catching fall walleyes than hunting.     Those that are fishing are taking advantage of the unseasonably warm weather and excellent walleye and sauger bite that is happening across the lake.  Cold weather is in the forecast in the upcoming days and weeks so that is also getting many excited. The best depths on the south end of LOW are 22-28 feet of water.     Vertical jigging with frozen emerald shiners is catching most of the walleyes, saugers and jumbo perch.  Depending upon where on the lake you are fishing, some slots and big trophies are in the mix as well, but most reports are talking about good numbers of eaters.    Jumbo perch are coming in good numbers this fall which will serve ice anglers well.  Watch out for an occasional pike or even lake sturgeon mixed in with the walleyes.      There are good numbers of walleyes and saugers across the south shore which is setting up nicely for early ice.   On the Rainy River...  There continues to be good numbers of shiners in the river, and consequently, there are good walleyes in the river as well.     Walleyes along with saugers, pike and some sturgeon are coming in up and down the river.  Most walleyes are being caught in 10-25 feet of water in various stretches of the river.   Jigging with live or frozen emerald shiners is the key. Some anglers are also still slow trolling crankbaits upstream to cover more ground and find fish. Both methods are producing solid results. Sturgeon fishing remains strong.  The catch-and-release sturgeon fishing is open into the spring when it changes to the "keep season" on April 24th. Up at the NW Angle...  As temps are getting colder, most are in the woods hunting and not fall fishing, however, for those who bundle up, fishing continues to be excellent.     A nice mixed bag with walleyes, saugers, perch, pike and crappies being caught. Very good muskie fishing with the colder water temps and shorter days.  Some big fish and some good numbers are being caught amongst the islands.  Both casting and trolling is getting it done.

I hunt in the rifle zone so I don't have a need to use a shotgun to hunt deer, but I would be looking at this if there was ever a need to.   There could be state legislation introduced next summer that eliminates the shotgun zone completely.  It has bipartisan support.  Wisconsin removed theirs years ago and MN is usually later to follow.  They've tried to pass it more than once and it came up just short both times.  Probably just a matter of time.

      Screw that, here's whatch need!  😆   Power-Shok Rifled Slug 10 Gauge 766 Grain Grain Weight: 766 Shotshell Length: 3-1/2in / 89mm Muzzle Velocity: 1280

20 ga has become a real popular deer round in the last 5 or so years.  The rifled barrels are zinging those sabot slugs with rifle like accuracy out to 100 yards easily.  Some go so far as dialing in for a 200 yard shot but really, by 150 they’re falling off pretty low.   I have a single shot Ultraslug in 20 ga that shoots really well at 100 yards.  Most everyone I know that has bought a slug gun lately has gotten the Savage 220 in 20ga.  Problem can be finding the shells you want.

My son always bugs me about getting a nice light over-under 20ga for grouse hunting.  I say Heck no, I'm getting a 3 1/2" 10ga so I can put as much lead in the air that I can!!     So, I'm keeping my 12ga.

That’s almost exactly what I was thinking.  Have slug barrels for both   One for turkey and one for deer.      I have a 20ga mosseberg as well. (Combo came with the scope but never used.   I always liked the 12 better
    • leech~~
Wanderer is right on the money and covered it well.  I was wondering too if you had a slug barrel for one of your guns?  If so you could make that your slug gun with a scope, and the other your turkey gun with the Red dot.  As you can afford it.
