Hello! I am taking my family in mid July to Big Sandy. I have never fished this lake before, I was hoping to get some pointers on how to fish this lake during this time of year. I really am not picky on what I put my family on, pan fish, pike, or walleye, whatever I just want to get them on fish. Any advice would be helpful! Thank you in advance.

There's plenty of structure to fish on Big Sandy but I find I have my best luck on walleyes on the north east corner of the main basin. There are lots of humps, points, nooks and crannies to fish in and around, usually down about 14 - 18 feet works good and mornings up until 9:00 or 10:00 seem to be the best time. Lindy rigging with a green bead and red hook or red bead and green hook works well. If the fish are concentrated in a tight spot off a point or side of a point I sometimes mark their depth, throw a marker and anchor on high ground up wind and slip bobber fish them. Leeches are generally all I use on Big Sandy for walleyes. Good Luck.

Through the family in the boat. Grab a shallow shad and troll the main basin. Its really a backwater and you will have action all day!

  • 3 weeks later...

Spent the weekend on Big Sandy and managed to pull some eyes top side...Each day we got 20-25 eyes with all but 6 were under 14"s... We found them stacked on the side of a point and found them here and there on the tops of humps...9-12ft was our best depth...It was a good weekend, just wish the fish were bigger.
