Got into some real nice quality today. Found crappies an a few real nice gills hanging in a pocket in the weeds. Setting the bobber roughly two ft down over 4-5ft of water proved to be just what the fish wanted.

Had a bit of a tough time finding a place out of the wind today. After a little looking,  stumbed upon a small protected bay on a lake just South of town.  The fish in this lake are not exactly known for their large size..... still, it was out of the wind:)

I was very surprised at the size of some of the bluegills I mannaged to catch. Got a few upto 9in.:) crappies were a little onthe small size, nothing over 10in....but still fun.  Gills were pretty much hugging the shoreline, while the crappies were holding over the tops of the weeds, 3-5 ft.

Made it out twice yesterday, first time was out to the Horseshoe chain. We had been doing very well out there the last two weeks, but today was different. We could still find the fish....just couldn't get very many to bite:/. The ones we did get were on the smaller side. Nothing worth a picture here. Water temp was mid 50s- 63

A little later in the day we hit lake number two,  got quite a few crappies, most were between 9-10in, but there were a few quality ones mixed in. Pockets in the vegetation was the key on this lake. The larger crappies were holding close to the bottom, using clear pockets in the thick weeds.

Love fishing from the kayak:) I have only had the real boat on the water twice this spring, the rest of my fishing has been from the kayak.

Making me jealous!!! Kayak is out in the shed ready to go just got to find some time to get out there!  If anyone could post a pic of there setup that would be awesome looking to do some more mods to the yak and having a hard time coming up with ideas! I've got a 10 foot yak and have had  a 1.5 pound folding anchor works fine when there a "light" wind but does not hold at all when its over 10mph looking at upgrading do you guys think 3 pound anchor would be better for the "bigger" lakes in MN?

Fun today. started out with huntfish in his boat and then went to the yak after lunch. ome of the crappies were crazy black. Crazy when a big old hen turkey flew right over our heads !!  lol  Johns pup Jane decided to give a kiss to a crappie. Fun getting another 12 incher to the yak. :)

my girlfriend bought a kayak over the winter, she has a trolling motor that we are going to attach to it with a little engineering. i want to pick one up over this next winter and see how 'modding' her kayak goes.

that looks like a nice set up. that crappie in one of your pictures is so dark!

the wind was killing me when i went out in it a couple weeks ago, but i found a little bay in the lake i was on and picked up a few crappies. but i need to get her an anchor for her kayak for sure. the kayak will be my metro fishing deal, since the boat stays at our cabin.

I have a nearly permanent sandle tan from the flip-flops I wear while fishing.

I would prefer to go barefoot, but the trolling motor pedal gets to hot to tolerate, even with one of those covers on it.

Was back on the hunt for the big bluegill I lost yesterday..... the bite was less than fantastic. Ended up getting a few gills, but nothing huge though. Same can be said for the crappies. Did see quite a few fish on beds today. I choose not to target spawning fish, even if it means not doing so well;)

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?
    • LakeofthewoodsMN
On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
